Houstin, we have a problem....

I've spent the past two days pulling an engine and stripping it down to a short block. Before I pulled it out of the car (which wasn't running) I didn't even think to see if the front pulley spun or not. After pulling and stripping it down I get to about the point in the picture and think...hmmm I wonder....and I tried spinning it, no go. The thing won't spin by hand. I didn't worry to much about it, but i couldn't help thinking that it should spin freely by hand. I was right, it SHOULD spin freely (since the 13b shortblock sitting on the table does) So now i'm @#$%^ Is there anyway (without taking the block apart) to free it up or to see if it's rebuildable. I paid $100 for the long block with 64K on it and I would hate to trash it.

I would use the same treatment as if the engine were in the car. MMO, ATF, and some gentle nudging.

This may be a stupid question, but is it in gear with the parking brake on?

Wow, I hope that was a joke...

Try turning the motor backwards, gently. It may have spat a seal and jambed, may be carbon locked or rusted in place. Take a look in the exhaust ports, what do you see?

If it moves ccw 180* then try cw, gently, don't force if you hit resistance.

I'll try it. I'll keep you guys posted.

Did you take the flywheel off? The flywheel may be resting on the ground. I know it's stupid, but it could happen.

Rotofire 02-04-05 10:45 AM

yep flywheel is off.

Mike, try some of that military freeze gas you have. I still want a rotor. Hook a man up.

Lost me on the freeze gas. Is this humor, or something I haven't heard about?

By the way, how do things look inside the exhaust ports?

Have you been able to turn the motor any?
