Hood scoop idea, any thoughts comments?
Had an idea for a hood scoop for my SE, kinda popped up since im working on a custom cold air intake thought id take it a step further. for now its some cardboard taped up for a general idea, planning to cut into my hood and have air flow right down into the filter. my plan was also to just bolt it on, so no welding or any of that. pix coming real soon gotta upload them

I say no, Air scoops just dont sit right on the FB is you ask me

here's a cold air intake for youhttp://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...Picture002.jpg

I love your intake '84, even comes with a supercharger!
As for your idea Anton... just go with a headlight scoop, it will look much better. |
I really like 84s idea, thats kinda what i was striving for but dont really have the skill or resources for that, and i never really liked the headlight scoop so thats why i decided to make one.
|
another idea i had was like a more round one, like a guage pod style
|
What you're trying to make looks a lot like the early 300zx scoops, have you seen pictures of those? I'm pretty sure a couple of guys here are using them, check it out. May save you some time!

In all honesty, the only scoop design that I have seen that's meant to "suck air in" that even looks remotely good is a TII hood scoop...

An early capri scoop simulates a TII scoop fairly well

well i mean when im driving itll force air into the engine bay and into the airfilter, its not to necessarily suck air in.

^^^ thats exactly what i want to do |
Yeah? Awesome! A lot easier to just buy it than have to deal with the fab work.
I'm a fan of the early Mustang/Capri scoops. They weren't actually meant to suck in, they have a dummy cover over the air hole... Easy fix, the "dummy cover" slips right out. I've not cut any holes yet, I thought about something that may be a problem. I'm worried that with the scoop where it is, it's just going to force air to recirculate inside the engine bay... wouldn't do much cooling down if that was the case... Oh, here's a picture for reference. I just have it setting on the hood, so don't mind the gap. Or the wrong color! http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-...46887_3703.jpg Edit: Oops, didn't see your post 84stock. Well, I'll leave my picture up anyways... Gotta represent the scoop ;) |

id definitely have to see pics of it when its done, also, just my suggestions if you're already planning on going with this, is to move it back a bit, that's just for aesthetics, and also because at night, it seems like the headlight is gonna block all the air going to it, which won't do you much good. also, make the height a bit shorter, but that's just for MY taste lol. it's gonna look too bulky, but as long as its functional, who gives a crap right lol

I will probably be sticking a NACA duct on my hood.
|
The funny thing is, the GSLSE air box is a factory cold air intake (just make sure the duct tube only goes half way in front of the rad and add an elbow). Leave it stock and add a drop in k&n panel filter and save a lot of grief.
|
Exactly. A scoop like that is not going to make much if any difference, and if you ask me, really doesn't look right.
|
Definitly go with a NACA duct. They use airflow dynamics to suck air in and will benefit your intake more than a big ass scoop. They also look better, and come pre made in carbon fibre from McKinney Corp. Bolt on and low price. Check it out here - http://secure.mckinneycorp.com/AMAZI...2D4410&eq=&Tp=

Find the "rx7 competition preparation manual" and check out the not so invasive air scoop design that they recommend. It may not suit your application but its a good design.

you kind of lost me, what about a duct tube half way infront of a radiator?

another thing to think about is water, if its raining and the duct is right over your filter, it's gonna fuck everything up.
also i was looking at the front end of my car the other day, and i noticed these "air ducts" that are right infront of the front wheels. so i was thinking, maybe you could just "re-route" that air into your intake? :dunno: that way you don't have to modify your hood and you'll still get colder air, but then again, there's that water issue :icon_tup: i'll have to go look at my car, but it's starting to rain. idk if there will be enough room to try to make that work or not |
