holy $hit!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! i just got back to school and i just had a terrible and an amazing thing happen!! i have a question but ive got to tell the story so here goes... ok so get back from a weekend long trip and ive just put on my new weber and im ready to finally drive it back to school i take my buddy for a ride (it was wet but still way more wheel spin and power than before and it sounds absolutly wicked!) any way the car runs fine absolutley no problem except for a short lil time it had trouble idling. so anyways im enoying the new power heading to richmond on i-75 about a 20-25 min drive if ya take it easy and just as i cross over a bridge i easily put the pedal down to pass somebody and it goes dead!! im like ohh shit! the cable broke and after inspecting i was right it did but it just came of the bracket phew! i thought so i try reattching it with the only thing i have zip ties. it gets back on there i start it rev it up ad the llil cylinder comes flying at me while glowing hot orange!? then as i turn around i see the cable burst into flames!! it snaps in 2 way beyond road side repair so im despratly trying to call people and get a tow truck when it occured to me my disconnected choke cable is still good hmmmm so i zip tie it to the throttle bracket and amazingly it worked! i drove the car the rest of the 10 miles and through traffic with a hand operated accelerator! so ive got the car in a decent place now the school parking lot (sigh) and now i have to put on a new throttle cable. but how should i mount it? i dont understand why it got so hot it was mounted really close to the alternator and may have touched it but would it pick up current? any picks of your weber throttle cable brackets would be great (side draft) or any info on what may have happened would be great im really screwed lol

That is something else man, what was it like use a hand accelerator?

Metallic_rock 04-26-04 09:46 AM

awesome dude.

as far as the bursting into flames thing, the only thing I can think is that it may have chafed on your alternator + and caused an arc.

Great thinking, though!!!

bigb3433 04-26-04 10:55 AM

yeah im thinking it caused an arc too i guess ill mount the new one over top and across the carb or buy a shortie one and mount it on the near side of the carb. as far as the handle thing goes it was really weird especially shifting cuase at first i would forget to let go of the choke when i clucthed adn the car would rev up and also steering while shifting was waay difficult but after a while i got used to it i could prolly drive like that a lot but i was in such fear the other cable would brake i jsut got it to the nearest parking lot and shut down it was definatley one for the books.

necessity truly is the mother of invention, NICE JOB!!!

You were very fortunate, the only thing to cause a melt down like is a direct short. Check the entire of your cable even under the dash, these cables are usually sheethed in plastic, if your short didn't occur at the alternator then you have a potentially serious problem elsewhere. Keep an eye out for components in your electrical system that might be acting up or suddenly quit working.
Kudo's again on bringing it home.

A choke cable is going back in my REPU. :) The previous owner removed it for some reason (dellorto).

slashdawg00110 04-26-04 02:43 PM

What a story! Congratulations on bringing it and yourself home in (mostly) one piece.

What did you use to steer while pulling your wire with one hand and working you stick with the other?? Let me guess, your girlfriend used the wheel since there was nothing else for her to look after. Heeeeee, LOL, had to do it!!! If you were with a buddy, I hope he was steering, 'cause nobuddy is gonna pull my wire or work my shaft. LOL, that two!!! I'm on a roll. Hell, if you had one of those old fashioned knobs on your wheel, you could have steered with your mouth, and hope you steer clear of SanFransico. WOW, that's three!!!!! LMAO

faye x7 04-27-04 03:00 AM

You are the fucking man....man...haha
