Axle swap checklist
Hoping to either today or tomorrow swap my axle in from user john smack:

Axle came off an '83 and is of the lsd/disc flavor, it is replacing my open/drum axle which decided to lose a few teeth when I tried to do a reverse burnout
Things I have:
the axle
(damn customs)
the car
new struts/springs, suspension goodies to swap while the axle is off
Things I know I need:
Brake pads
Test of the calipers, possibly rebuild kits
Diff oil (what kind?)
What else do I need to complete this? If I'm lucky, my buddy who has a lift, air tools, and a 50 gallon compressor will be helping me.

the rear ebrake cables are different from drum to disk, so you the disk e brake cables, just the part that actually hooks to the calipers.
a lot of people use royal purple rear end lube, I opted to use full synthetic lucas gear lube, as well as GM LSD addative.
i bought rebuild kits for my rear calipers from autozone for $9.99 a pop. You might as well just rebuild them while they are off the car, $20 is cheap insurance.
thats about all i can think that you will need, good luck!

that im not sure about, the lsd rear i bought came with them. Im not sure if autozone sells them or not. what all do you have, or just a bare rear end? mine came with wattslink/all control arms, rotors, ebrake cables, and calipers. Only had 50k miles on it and i paid $100.

what you see is what i got
i was under the impression that since this too came from an 83 and is going into my 83 that it should bold right up minus the change for the ebrake?

i didnt realize you posted a link in your earlier post. What you need are the cables that go from the rear calipers and hook to the cable that you posted. The cable that you posted the link for goes from the handle inside the car, bolts underneath the car and runs to the back of the car on each side. From there it hooks to the cables you need, which then bolt to the caliper.
On the drum brakes the cable runs to inside the drum, with disc it bolts to the outside of the caliper. Thats why you need to get the right ones.

got 1 for each side and a set of pads for the rear, going to hope the calipers work, or i'll pick up rebuild kids locally...

swapped the axle, is it correct that we had to take the bit that connects to the drive shaft off of the old diff and put it onto the new one? drive shaft wouldn't bolt up otherwise.

they both had a bolt with nut the bolt pattern on the new one did not match the old one, but they both pulled off after removing the nut and the other bolted right on so we assume that was a necessary (and safe?) fix.

The '83 and up have the large pinion flange. The '82 and older have the small one. You can drill the smaller size bolt pattern into the large flange if you need it. I see no reason why you couldn't drill the driveshaft flange for the smaller size if you need to go the other direction but I haven't heard of it being done before.
