My gsl project.

SO after being a forum asshat for a couple of years, providing triage for my 83 gsl to keep in running, I've moved to a new place with a garage (no dishwasher, but lets have some priorities), I've decided to undergo my largest project to date: A pretty much complete restoration of my 83 gsl. I've been working on it for a couple of weekends and finally got some pictures on photobucket so I think maybe I can post them up.

History:
Bought it in 2005, completely stock with a mazda remanned 12a (40K at the time, now about 50K), a little bit of cancer, but a really nice interior. No cracks on the dash, but the driver's seat bolster has some wear (to be polite).
Removed the rats nest and installed headers, Tokico Illuminas and King Springs. Not much really, just stuff to keep me busy (and poor).

Lets see if we can do pictures.

I think the heater hose blew up (which precipitated the engine rebuild), spraying the entire bay with oil. That was not cleaned so everything is covered with greasy black dirt crap. That will change. The lighter spots on the strut towers are where I scraped the junk off, and like a dinosaur skeleton covered by silt, the paint is really nice in there. To bad it didn't spray the entire exterior, cause the rest of the paint looks like ****.

Congrats on posting your own project on the forum. I like the black interior. The engine bay looks horrible but I'm sure it will clean up well. Have fun.

So, been running the car in the backyard with seafoam before pulling the engine, the car is down to go parts so I can't really take it on the road. I let it run while I did some non-rx work in the garage and once I finished up I thought I'd let her have some gas before shutting her down so I stuck a stick in between the pedal and the seat, kept her right around 5500. Started to do some cleaning up and I looked back and coolant was squirting out of the overflow tank (I guess I got a pinhole in it) and the temps were climbing. I caught it at about 3/4 of the way up and let her idle and the temps came down.
The overheat exhaust sensor was on, but as I found out upon searching (let that be lesson to you asshats who don't search) its not really an issue if you have an aftermarket system. I looked at the headers and they were glowing bright red.
On with the questions, Is this something that I should be concerned about? And, more importantly, what aspect of it?
Coolant shooting out like a 5th grade pissing contest?
Headers glowing?
Exhaust overheat sensor light on?

No cats; header, presilencer, muffler.
I guess my question is:
Does anybody think any of this is cause for concern?

You have some minor cooling system issues I would bet,as far as the rest,I would NOT worry about it since it didn't get ALL the way up.FLUSH that coolant system,"back flush" from the exit of the heater core so the deposits get blown out of the entrance, connect the heater core hoses and fully flush everything,I would make sure to check the thermostat if that happened to me,don't worry about it

Maybe inspect fan clutch or electric fan, (depending) I would always run mine filthy rich with allot of timing.

did some demo on the car. Only one thing holding the engine in place and that is the ac. Can I just let out the freon? (saving a little in a plastic bag for recreational purposes, of course).

So um yeah,
spent tons of time pulling, cleaning, and refurbishing parts so they'll look nice going back in. That engine bay was NASTY!
I dare anyone to show me a worse one. There were areas in there where the crap was 1cm thick (1" = 2.54cm). I've never seen so much wd-40 get used in my life.
Anyway- heres some pics.

Soooooo,

right after this last post, my landlord got foreclosed on, and we got evicted. We lawyered up and rather than getting into the paper as the people who evicted some dude and his 8 month pregnant wife, the new owners let us stay in the house until July of 08. The car was not operable, so she got loaded on a dolly and stuck to the back of the biggest uhaul available.

I got a new job down in Norfolk and bought a house with a big garage but no plumbing or wiring (copper buys a lot of crack). I worked on the house after work and on weekends until I broke my leg after falling through a rotted floor (read: fatass) which precipitated a period of extreme loss of work ethic (read: opiates) which then resulted in last hired, first fired (read: **** you bossman). Shitty economy and specialized degree led to 2 years of long term substitute teaching (read: good luck America).
Now though, I am teaching in a quasi-rural area and have gotten the goahead from the missus to get the gsl back to running.
The car is mostly back together, the dog standing on the car is severely overweight, the kid is 3 and a huge help (he wants to know when his car will be ready).
The last bits have been ordered (some black dragon stuff, including manifold gasket, new RB PP muffler to finish up the RB street port exhaust) carb has been rebuilt, wiring harness is mostly sorted, brakes and clutch are bled and working.
All thats left is changing gear oils, getting the intake and exhaust installed and the last of the wiring hooked up or deleted, and then start-up.
My only issues are bench adjustments of the carb.
Any questions?
the "post quick reply" button seems kinda understated but going advanced is not my thing.
et voila

welcome back! you had said you thought your engine bay was filthy..and by golly it was. i had a similar experience back in 2008 as well when converting my 85 GS to a GS with a GSL-SE drivetrain. the engine bay was covered in undercoating. took a lot of brake cleaner and simple green to get it clean. i've never felt like i was drunk when not drinking. that brake cleaner needs some venting let me tell you. anyhoo, here's a pic of what i was working with:

and here's what i ended up with:

back on pace now, you'll have to show us some new pics of your 7!

that was undercoating? It looks just like mine did. Kinda gooey but you could scrape it off?

I'll try to get some pics up this weekend but I got to replace a radiator in my wife's maxima and my garage is being used as a staging ground for a bunch of work being done on the house so the 7 may have to wait for the new parts until next week.

Thanks for the interest.

it was undercoating. some aftermarket type stuff applied when the car was new. ziebart type stuff. the brake cleaner pretty much melted it down and it wiped away with a shop towel. after wiping each section off with brake cleaner, i scrubbed it with simple green. it took some time and was an awful experience.

carb cleaner works almost as well as brake cleaner. It might be better for certain areas because it stays wet longer. So use both. Maybe wet it down with carb cleaner so the goo gets soft. Then go over it with brake cleaner so it comes off easier/faster.

i used wd-40. That stuff is great.

Trans and diff oils are changed. Gear oil smells great, and now, so do I.
Got manifold gasket. Should I use RTV when I put that on?

Bench adjustments for the carb? ie idle adjustment screw and mix?
I tried to follow the service manual on the idle adjustment but I felt like it just kept going in and in without stopping.

And I think the cooling issue from 4 years ago is a result of slipping water pump (yoohoo belt fix)

and by the way, not to shittalk pineapple but $12 shipping on that is ridiculous. Got a 3L220 from protools (amazon) for like $9 with $4 shipping.

carb is on and attached, cables are hooked up. Tomorrow I'll be getting the vacuum lines plumbed up.
bolted on the rb street port header and center section this past week and ups brought me my rb pp muffler today. That'll get bolted on tomorrow. Taking the battery to my buddy's shop tomorrow morn to sit on the trickle charger.
I'll get some pics tomorrow when I don't have so much **** to grade. Seriously, kids today. Always doing their homework and wanted it graded and returned.
First start up since 11/17/2007 will hopefully happen on Saturday. Come on over and drink some greasy cans of pbr.

its alive!
and sounds about as good as frankenstein's monster's grammar.

I've had the mixture screw everywhere between 1 turn from closed to 3 turns from closed and nothing seems to be getting any better. So I think I have a pretty massive vacuum leak.

I guess I'll close up the vacuum line connections from the carb spacer and see if that helps to tune it.

A few questions:
The richer solinoid and bowl vent connections, can I leave them in and unplugged or do I need to get them out and capped off?
Should I cap the bowl vent outlet (I think thats what the big vacuum line nipple looking thing is)?
