hockey puck motor mounts on SE question
 

ok so i know people replace their motormounts with hockey pucks. So I bought the pucks took out the old motor mounts and crossmember thing.

Then I just drilled holes in the pucks and ran some bolts through them.... well that didnt work

apparently what i need to do is reuse those metal plates that go on either side of the stock rubber bushing? Is this right?

but the thing is the stock mounts have a stud running through them.... which cant get out, I've been told they can just be taken out but i spent a lot of time with a table clamp and a rubber mallet and they just don't come out.

what gives how are people doing this? Please help me! my poor rx-7 is sitting in the garage with an unattached motor... and all she wants to do is drive.

not sure how people do the hockey puck thing. My solid mounts are round chunks of steel but they are also a bit thicker than hockey pucks. I didnt reuse my metal pieces that go on the otside of the rubber pieces.

Perhaps your problem is the rubber mallet. Try using a solid hammer but be careful to not to bend the main part.

The studs on the stock mounts are attached essentially to the rubber between the plates. There is no solid connection between the studs, which is how it dampens the vibrations through the rubber. The way you want to do it is with 4 pucks, one on each side of the engine mount. The best way to do it is probable to cut one puck in half, drill a hole in each half in the center or where you think is good, then place a whole puck between the mount and the crossmember, and the half puck on the other side of the mount, like a sandwich with the engine mount between the two pucks. Put a bolt through the whole thing, with a large washer on the top to prevent the bolt from pulling through the top puck. Here is a quick diagram I made in paint:

Umm, are you sure about that? I thought only two pucks were needed for this...

i appreciate the drawing and effort 85rotary but with one hockey puck between the crossmember and the mount it does not span enough distance. Thats one of the main reasons I was going to put the metal plates back on.

has anyone here ACTUALLY done this? Not to be rude or say I don't appreciate the help but everyone I've talked to has never actually done it and gives me a different story.

The metal plates IMO should go back on. I realized this when i installed the RB units. The engine sits entirly different. It alos makes your Header if you have one have to manipulate it to adapt to the new position of you engine. Try to duplicate as stock as possible but enhance the stiffnesss.

Ok, so any update on this??? How do they feel? I need to replace my mounts soon and I have been considering this.

i did it. I didn't have any issues. Just get a bolt and 3 big grade 8 washers per side. that's what I did.
