high-flow cats
 

Can anyone recommend a good high-flow catalytic converter which would utilize the air tube running to it on my '83 GSL? I didn't know if the stuff in the usual Jeggs, Summit, JC Whitney, etc. catalogs could withstand the high temps of a rotary engine.

I'll do that... am I correct in assuming that most "high-flow" cats won't survive the heat of rotary exhaust unless they're specifically designed for it?

When you put it in, design the system in such a way that the cat can easily be swaped out for a straight pipe. Then you just put the cat in for testing purposes, then remove it so it stays good until the next test. :)

Thanks for the suggestion... I can't imagine how loud it would be w/ a straight pipe. It's bad enough with the POS Pace-Setter header and muffler on it! I'm curious to see how much power can be attained while leaving the emissions intact.

Someday when I get a new carb, I'll ditch the EPA ball 'n chain.

The interesting thing is the engine will make 100hp peak with the stock manifold and converters, while it will only make 90hp with the Pacesetter and no cats. The pacesetter truly is garbage.

I remain skeptical of your HP claims... do you have any supporting documentation? True, I had to hog a crap-load of metal out of the collector before I installed it, but it's much more free-flowing now. Once all the paint gets finished burning off :smoker: it may start growing on me.

Peejay has the right idea. No cat on the market that is high flow will last more than a year and a half if you run headers. I had a Random Tech cat for big cube engines that lasted two years. That is a personal record. I don't spend more than $80 on a cat now. Even the generics have the honeycomb matrix, which is what you want to see when you look inside it. With the air tube and a system that disengages air supply at 3000RPM, the cats aren't lasting more than a little over a year with continuous daily use. Essentially, I have had to replace them every year for inspection, now that I dwell on the matter. I have a conscious, however, that won't let me be a gross polluter...you may now begin to flame me...;)

mar3, I salute you in your efforts to save a little bit of the ozone. We don't have emissions testing here in Indiana, but I know how much I can't stand sitting in traffic behind some big-block noxious fume factory, especially when I'm on my motorcycle.. so I've also opted to retain much of my original emissions equipment for the time being.

I'd still like to find a freer-flowing cat though!

Look in a Summit or Jeg's catalog. They have cats for 455 cid Pontiacs. I absolutely guarantee that no rotary, even at 9000 RPM, can breathe as deep...

All of this is fine and dandy, but correct me if I am wrong... RB is the best hands down from start to finish... from header to tip...

My questions are...
1) Is a full RB exhaust emissions legal.
2) Is the HP gain that much?
3) Anywhere I can find it cheaper than $500 for complete system?
4) If I don't get a complete system, whats the order I need to buy the pieces (12a)

Oh I also will need to say I don't believe that without some kind of independant posted data somewhere to show this. I think someone here has said that before here, but never could understand it since it obviously did give me more high rpm gains. Since I never ran a header on the stock carb I don't know. I think maybe since that the pace setter seems to be a little longer then a RB streetable header it is tuned for a aftermarket intake rather then stock intake which savanging is not optimial for the stock carbs flow/rpm range?....purely my speculation.... But anyway, it is easy to make it into a long tube setup since it has that disconnect near the end of the pipe and you can make it as long as you want then before they collect...which I'm about to do now for the bridgeport. Run it uncollected up to about the rear axle.

Yeah, RB is really good, but expensive as well. When the time comes...I'll be getting a Bonez cat and the cat-back components from RB.

Is there an aftermarket cat that would bolt in to the same location as the presilencer on my RB system AND stand up to the heat produced by the rotary?
