Help! When tune-ups go bad...

I just bought a gsl-se like 2 days ago... it crunk up fine when the guy showed it to me, and i crunk it up yesterday myself. Well yesterday i went and bought some parts to give it a tune-up... I got a new dizzy cap, rotor button, and spark plugs: NGK-R br9eq14's.... well this morning i skipped my first college class to put them on and see how much better it runs... well it doesn't. the new rotor button exploded the first time i turned the key. I put the old rotor button in but kept the new cap and it won't crank. now i see smoke if i try to turn the key. so i put the old cap on as well, still nothing. the motor still turns over, but no crank. when the button exploded could it have knocked timing off? please don't tell me i popped this motor..

note: by exploded i mean the rotorbutton busted into peices.. i think it scraped the new cap and popped.

you didn't pop the motor. But you didn't seat the rotor button correctly. Don't ask me how I know. I see no reason why putting the old rotor and cap would not get your car started. It's probably next to impossible to have changed the timing that way, IMHO.

nah bro, you didn't pop the motor. Go take the rotor button back and tell them its defective. Give them the receipt and get a new one. But put it on right this time. And before anyone else tells you to do a search on how to put it on. I'll tell ya, search ok.

I had one grenade itself inside too, tore up the inside of the cap pretty bad in the process, bent a couple contacts on the inside of the cap, but when I put the old ones back on, it started right up, and my cars a POS.
What should he be checking for????

yea, really.. and what about the smoke? smells like something electrical, didn't do it before the rotor incident...

could i have flooded it? I'm about to pull the driver bin out and unplug the pump.. all ideas are welcome.

EDIT: I just unplugged the pump and turned it over.. finally crunk up, so i guess it was flooded... as for the electrical smoke, guess i'll be looking into that.. thanks guys, time to go see if autozone will take this shattered rotor cap back. =D
