Help Stalling when Shifting into Neutral
 

Hey guys I need help with my latest problem. This only happens sporadically. The last time it happened was about a week ago and hasnt happened since. The temperature outside was around -30c when it happened earlier this evening.

Its an 81 12a with full exhaust (racing beat header and presilencer, to a magnaflow straight through). Sterling nikki (which ran fine on the other car that it was on driven in winter). Carter fuel pump. Fuel pressure gauge set at 2.5 psi. Rats nest removal. And fresh fuel filter as of a couple days ago.

Anyways whenever I shift from any gear (even first) into neutral and try and coast the revs will drop really fast and as soon as it drops below 1000 rpm theres no bringing it back.

I have tried reving it up to keep it past 1000rpm so it wont die, but as soon as I shift into any gear to try and start going agian it will die.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Iirc, 2.5 pi is on the low end of what Sterling recommends. Try bumping the psi up to 3.0 and run a can of Heet through fuel tank.

Alright I shall try that. By heet, do you mean methanol?

Heet is a brand name of a water remover avialble at Pepboys, Autozone, Advance etc...

Alright I shall check that out. Today I stepped up the fpr from 2.5 psi to about 3.2 psi and also added some heet. It is running slightly better, a bit harder to start though. When driving it only stalled twice while shifting into neutral, compared to about 20 times last night.

The one thing I need to do is get a better fpr gauge as I think the one I have is a little inacurate. After that maybe a few tweaks from the sterling site. If it still persists I might just right it off as a "too cold" problem.

The one thing I forgot to say in the first post was that, whenever I approach a turn and try and downshift from third to second, the car will stall when I make the turn. If I give it some gas to try and release the clutch it doesnt help and will stall no matter what. So what I have had to do is ride the clutch through the turn until im through the turn and then release the clutch to go.

Would this problem be associated with stalling when shifting into neutral?

I'll bet its the pilot bearing siezing up. Have you heard some noise from the flywheel area lately when in neutral?

...or timing. How are your spark plugs/cap/rotor/wires? When was the last time the timing was checked?

Take a look at www.re-speed.com for a fuel pressure gauge. They've got the only one I know of that is actually accurate at the pressures we are dealing with.

I havent noticed any noice from the transmission area.

The timing was checked maybe about a month or 2 back, but thats probably something that I should double check just to be sure its right. As for the ignition system, spark plugs wires are pretty much new ngk's, spark plugs are good, same with the cap and rotor. The one thing that I may have a problem with is one of my ignitors, as it seems to have a very potent exhaust gas.

Or your idle is just tuned very rich, which could cause the issues you've described. Go through the step by step idle tuning guide over at Sterling's...
