Help with rebuilt engine !!
I jus put a rebuilt engine in my 85 SE. I have compression, spark and fuel but I can't even get it to fire. Doesn't make sense to me. Anyone got any ideas ?
|
were did you check the spark, at the plugs or further up the line
|
I checked it at the plugs.
|
check all mass air fittings,
or map whatever they use, replace ignition components that are not new, spark plugs, wires, etc check fuel filter, hook up battery charger and feed it tons of juice, when i had trouble starting this 87 that i bought and hadent been run in years i was going insane trying to get it to start, turns out it just wanted more juice, i hooked up the battery charger/starter, put it in charge for 10 minutes on highest setting, then stuck it in start for 5 minutes left it in start while cranking the car and sure enough it fired on up i'll try to think of some more things |
All of the ignition stuff is new. I didn't change the fuel filter but I seem to have plenty of fuel thru the injectors.

try removing your cat, my friend bought a rebuilt engine from mazda and put it in and he tried to start it and he couldn't. So he takes it to Mazda and they are like, oh yeah just remove the cat. he removed it and it started right away. Aparently the cat was clogged big time and that was the reason his first engine went.
|
I tried disconnecting the cat and still nothing.
I'm not sure that the timing is set correctly as I had to reinstall the front pulley but I would think that it should at least fire in any position. |
Well I got it running, loose wire on one of the injectors.
The bad news is I guess the rebuild didn't go so well. I have tons of oil dripping out the exhaust. Any ideas on what I did wrong ? |
did you rebuild the engine? if so i would take it back apart or check every single one of your hoses to make sure everything is together properly
|
sounds like the side seals were installed improperly,
or there just bad. also could the dark substance dripping out be gas? my 87 used to drip out gas and it looked black from the carbon in the engine and exhaust |
No, it's for oil for sure and a whole lot of it.

Originally posted by MIKE-P-28 Dude have you ever put an engine back togther using used parts? Those side seal springs dont seem to have their cream colored paint drop on them anymore? And I bet when I put mine back together, I couldnt have possibly got all 12 right? And mine still ran... I doubt side seals have anything to do with it? DAMMIT SORRY CLICKED QUOTE INSTEAD OF EDIT, DAMN DAMN |
Well it looks like at least a quart under the car and it only ran for about a min. Smoked like hell. After I shut it off I could actually hear it boiling in the cat. I guess I should pull the exhaust loose and watch. Do you mean the two oil seals in the sides of the rotors ?
|
Yes, you sure one of them isnt cracked? or missing the rubber rings?
There will be 4 rings total (2 inner and 2 outter) 1 inner and 1 outta per side of the rotor Oil travels up and down the E-shaft and thats the only way to keep the oil outta the combustion chamber is those rings... |
Well I don't think so. I replaced them all. Can anything go wrong with the metering pump to transfer that kind of volume ?
|
I doubt it, the OMP has little bitty lines, It would take a long time of running to transfer that amount of oil
im thinking.... |
The only possibility that I can think of is if I got one, or some of the oil seal springs reversed. You know they are flip flopped based on the rotation of the rotor.
|
I rebuilt a motor once using total used parts and junk :) And I know I could have possibly got the springs reversed. If the oil seal protrudes outta the rotor a little I dont see how it wouldnt at least seal a little?
You sure you put all the rubber seals in the Oil seals? |
Well, I feel pretty stupid. I pulled the exhaust from the manifold, started it up and guess what no oil. I installed a used engine in this car prior to the rebuild only to find out it was junk. I never could get it to run so I rebuilt the original. The previous engine must have put the oil into the exhaust system. The only problem I have now is keeping it running. It seems to be flooding itself out.
I checked the compression and the rear is about 90 psi but the front is only about 40. Hopefully it will improve if I can keep it running. Thanks for the help |
I found a vacuum leak now have it down to a slight miss but it is idling too fast as well at about 2,000 rpm. It still will not restart without drying the plugs, pulling the injection fusable link and cranking it to clear it out. I think it might be a leaking injector. Anybody have any ideas ?
