Help! Putting on Front pulley... Timing help
Well I know this has must have happened to others... Well I have my car all ready to go with a new carb (weber45dcoe) and just put in a new used engine. What I screwed up with the new engine is I didn't put the front pulley on in the proper postion...
So my question is at what point should what rotor be so that one of the timing marks will match up with the indicator pin used for adjusting timing in order to get my pulley on properly??? Then from here I can just line up the dots on the distributor/housing and drop the distributor in and it should be close to the proper timing correct? |

You can turn the engine so that the front rotor is closest to and parallel to the T1/L1 spark plug holes. I use a light and a mirror to see in the holes. You could also stick a small screwdriver or something in the holes and feel when the rotor is closest to both holes. There are only four possible ways that the pulley can go on. Once you have the front rotor close to TDC, put on the pulley so that the leading mark is closest to the timing pin.
The other option is to remove the flywheel inspection cover (on passenger side of engine), and turn the engine until the notch in the flywheel lines up with the inspection plate opening. This should also be near TDC. (this method compliments of wackyracer). Again, put the pulley on with the leading mark closest to the timing pin. |
cool so when the front rotor is supposed to spark, ie lined up against where the plugs are this is top dead center? I hope it ends up being as easy as it sounds, this has been giving me all kinds of troubles...

so I just need to confirm is it the front rotor you line up with the spark plug holes or the rear rotor? I have heard both and I just need to know for sure in order to get my timing right...

Front rotor and use a straw or a clean pen, not a screw driver.
