help with my rx7
 

Well I bought a 83 rx7 about a month ago. The car sat for 2 years. Its pretty dirty inside and out but I only paid $100 for it so its not too bad.To the subject now, I got the car finally running today it gave me trouble as it would flood out as soon as i turned the key on so i wired a switch to the pump.I turn on the fuel pump just enough to fill the float bowls and then shut it off then i proceed to turn the engine over and itll turn on fine, but if i leave the pump on it'll flood the engine and it'll shut off. So if I just leave the pump on for a couple seconds and then shut it off while the engine is running it will run fine. I know the fuel pump was changed but i dont know what pump was put in. If a bigger fuel pump was installed would that be the cause of this? Or is it something else? Anyone have any ideas?

This is a common problem.

It seems that this is generally caused by stuck floats.
You can pull off the top of the carb and clean the float valves and such and the problem should be fixed.

i forgot to post this but the carb had been rebuilt before and I looked it all over and cleaned everything up before i tried turning it on.

check the floats....i think enigma's right...same thing kept happening to my friends 80. we pulled out the carb and saw the floats wer'e stuck to the bottom....so no biggie....sat down on the dining table and took it apart just for fun pulled out the float by wedging it out with a knife from the top and put it back in....so check the floats thru that little mirror thing on the carb.

yeah, the floats. well, not the floats, but the stopper pin. pull the floats out, there will be a , crap i can't explain it. but the atatch to the float, when the float bowl gets enough gas, it plunges the hole. usualy its square or triangular tube with a little cone end that plugs the hole.

I checked everything over today i cleaned everything up. I checked the needle seats they look fine to me they were clean too and also cleaned up the float bowls and adjusted the floats .I put everything back together and the thing still floods if i leave the pump on. Im thinking about installing a fpr. What do you guys think?

do you still have the stock fpr or check valve or whatever it is on the fuel return line?

also, you're sure that all the pieces to the valve seats for the floats are there?
There's a number of little pieces that are easy to lose track of...

yes that check valve is still on the return line and im sure all the pieces to the valve seats are there.
