Help me with simple wireing....

Hey I'm just wireing up a switch for my fuel pump but am unsure how to hook it up.. ive ran a + to the switch and connected that with a + to the pump and i gounded the other peg on the switch... is this right? can someone help me quick.. somethings not right.. your speedy reply is appreciated! :)

you would just ground the fuel pump to a location near the pump itself

If you are wiring a kill switch for the pump, the switch can be place inline with the positive wire... Make sure the switch you use can hold the amperage the pump draws... Id personally wire up a 500mA switch with a relay negative trigger configuration, but I dont want to get too copmplex on ya :D

If you want it simple, just go and get a large amperage 2 pole switch, probally ~5amp +

ok i have a 2 pole switch.. do i ground the switch itself or run a + from the battery to one pole and a + from the other pole to the pump?

if you want a fire ground the switch with a positive :D LOL

Just run a FUSED WIRE FROM THE BATTERY (I STRESS FUSED, put a inline fuse about 6-12 inches fromt he battery) to the switch and the other side of the switch to the pump, be sure the switch is large enough to handle the current draw needed by the pump, or you will melt the switch!

ok i have the switch grounded in the footwell with one of the poles... a + running to the switch from the battery and the + for the pump on that line.. i tryed putting the - back on the battery with lotf of sparks so i rechecked everything.. looked ok to me from what i know.. and i guess there was a problem with the wireing from all the sparks and electrical smoke.. i have a 10A fuse after the switch ill go move that to before the switch.. but do i have the + hooked up right? oh and i have the pump grounded with the stock wires

the sparks and electrical smoke are because you are short circuiting the switch. REPEAT AFTER ME, you DONT ground the switch at ALL! Theres 2 wires on the fuel pump, a posive and a ground. You ground the fuel pumps ground to a metal spot close to the pump!

Then run a fused wire from the battery to pole #1 on the switch, and then pole #2 goes to the fuel pump. The switch is probally bidirectional so it doesnt matter which pole you place with positive wire on, JUST DONT GROUND A HOT WIRE THROUGH THE SWITCH!

ok so the switch is just mounted on the + line no - needed.. :)

MIKE-P-28 01-26-03 08:18 PM

no negative needed, just ground it next to the fuel pump :D

Playing around with your cars wiring without having even a basic understanding of how electrical circuits work is just asking for trouble IMHO. :D

So if you follow the path of the wire it should go: from the battery, to an in-line fuse, in one pole of the switch, out the other pole of the switch, to the positive of the pump. The ground wire for the pump goes to the chasis. All done :).
