Help me decide what my car doesnt need
 

Ok, im trying to shave as much wieght from my car (without being crazy and getting rid of stuff i will need/really want).....

PIC 1: computer under dash on passenger side, im guessing i need it but i'd like to get rid of it if i could.....

PIC 2-4: Wires behind driver's seat do i need any of the wires that are unplugged from the storage bin lights and some other stuff that plugged into cruis control(gone) and stock amplifiers(gone)..............also what is the little black box thingy? And the huge white and black wires with the large round connection endings, are those for the radio? I did not even hook up my aftermarket antenna cause i never listen to the radio...............


i would like to make a huge project out of getting rid of wires that are no longer of any use and just make the wiring confusing....then i may try putting in new ground wires to see if that makes a difference in anything

before you rip out all those wires in search of loosing weight, rip out all of the sound deadening. I went and bought 10 pounds of dry ice, put on a leather glove, froze the shit and hit it with a hammer. It came off relatively easily, and there was ~30 pounds of it. After that, what is the model of your FB? If it is a -se, you need that box under the passenger seat. It's your engine's computer. If you have any other model, it is your "emissions control unit", and you don't need it if you have pulled all of the emissions equipment off of your car.

Sit down with the wiring diargams in the FSM and start reading. Familiarize yourself with with it and make a list of what you don't need, once you understand how they various components work in conjunction with each other.

When you remove components unplug or de-pin the unneeded wires, cut only as a last resort.

The ecu probably can be removed, on the S3 models, you will need to rewire for the fuel pump. I'm not sure if any of the warning systems are tied into the ecu, you will loose the auto function of the choke, hot and cold start assists.

that sounds like two good ideas to me, ill spend a weekend getting thatd done.....im removing the emiisions soon, when i do ill delete the ecu thing too, i am not excited about rewiring anything tho...

It doesent need my fat ass in there. thats for sure.

Excuse me if I am missing something here,but how much weight are you looking to save by removing some wiring,and an emissions control unit?I would think all the work of removing this stuff PROPERLY will not reward you with very much of a reward,and therefore in my opinion it is a waste of energy,and time.Wiring doesn't weigh that much especially in these simple-ish cars.Now if you were making a full on race car then I would say go for it,but if you want this car to be a daily driver,I think you are wasting time removing things that could still be useful in the future to some owner(or yourself)that may want to restore the car to original.I know that my opinion of keeping things as close to stock on these soon to be classic cars is an unpopular one,but to me you should be focusing your attention in other areas than removing a few wires.There are other ways to remove weight from a car,and wiring I wouldn't think would be on the top of the list.This is just my opinion though.I am sure I am wrong in my thinking to most people on here,but then again I am used to being wrong,I am married with children.

How serious are you about taking all this weight off?

I have stripped and driven in a completly striped out car and its not as cool as it seems.

a/c and every part a/c related
passenger seat
all carpet/sound insulation
spare tire/jack
emmissions equiptment
driver/passenger side windows
door panels
replace gas tank with a smaller one
fibreglass hood
straight pipes with no cats or mufflers
headliner on the roof

if you were to take all the peices listed above you car would be considerably lighter and 100% not street friendly.

Boog, it's your time but in my humble opinion you are wasting it. You are not going to gain anything by removing wires. If you want to spend your time wisely, figure out some new mod or do a mod that has been done to either increase efficency of the ignition system or to gain some HP.
Even if you did remove all the wires,ecu and other things the gains could not even be measured. Then as another member stated if someone was to buy your car someday they would be walking into a nightmare.

UNDERCAR TAR, its easy to remove and wieghs a ton.

Removing all this little shit is a waste of time unless you're building a purpose-race car. The only difference you'll notice is that you're driving a tinny, uncomfortable car that makes a racket over every bump and crevice in the roads.

that's true(what everyone said)...we'll see what i decide, not sure yet.......im not worried about future owners for sure!!! i really like the not daily driver friendly characteristics of my car...no a/c in vegas, loud noises (some i cant tell where there coming from), it adds character i guess ; ) ...........really, i want a nearly strictly race only purpose built car, not only do i not miss creature comforts i enjoy my car more with them gone


for the waste of time thing, i love spending my free time in the driveway, its relaxing and rewarding, but i totally know what you guys are saying about it ending up being useless for performance.....so, i may not do it ; ) p.s. im not just saying that to defend myself as if i were offended or something.......

remove the tar as stated and the stock deadner but please replace with a new sound dedner otherwise it would be shitty

in all honesty just remove those stero amp wires leave the ecu if you retain carpet its not noticeable

as stated above the time involved could be spent on cleaning/fixing/tuning and with more hp it wouldnt be noticed

Take off the body and just drive with the chassis, engine, tranny, ect. and seats and then you will notice the differece!!!!

I have basically stripped my car down to the bare essentials. no sound deadening, no carpet, no headliner, no door panels, no plastics.

just a couple of lightweight buckets, a dashboard, and a shifter. no emissions equipment, no a/c, no p/s, e-fan. Next thing that i'm going to do is replace my front fenders/doors/front bumper cover with better looking ones, find a good black dashboard, and remove my heater system. I'm an automotive prick, and this to me is nirvana. To everyone else that has ever ridden in the car it's loud, scortching hot, smelly, rough riding, and obnoxious. You need to be a hardcore car nut to stand driving a car like this. I can't drive mine daily, she's a weekend/night car to take out and get my adrenaline pumping. \

If you're planning on keeping it a DD, or something you can take your girl/friends out in, i'd say pull the stock sound deadening, put on a full RB exhaust (make sure you seal it well), and call it a day. the rest of the car, for your normal person (the vast majority of people think that i'm insane), is completely necessary to keep it streetable.
