Help!!....Major engine problem

Alright i drove the car yesterday up to the store....on my way back the overheat exhaust light came on....i was only like 1/2 block from my parking spot so i drove there and parked it.....today i went out to start it and the light is still on and the engine is idling really really bad....i mean its shaking everything from the engine to the tranny all the way to the exhaust......then i took it for a little drive around this corner to see what was wrong....as i went i couldnt accelerate and the rpm's didnt go above 3k.....im really afraid that i somehow blew a seal or the carb is junk.....any help will be appreciated and if i have to get a new engine how long should i look at for the complete removal and reinstall of a new engine......also i have a major deadline of February 8th to have all this done b/c thats when i get new orders and i have to leave for North Carolina.....thanks for any input...parker

another thing is that i removed the hose that connects under the airfilter...the bendable hose that attaches to the header....and then it stopped dieing when i turn it over....but it still has what feels like no compression....

once you find an engine, tow the car to LA and I will install it AT NO CHARGE provided that you supply me with all the heines that I can drink and bbq.

Sounds like your exhaust is overheating which could be a couple different things. Do you still have a catalytic converter? If so, it may be clogged.

i still have the cat and the pre-silencer....so ur saying i might be able to just remove the cat and run the muffler and i would be good?....if thats the case then im in no worry b/c i just bought a complete 3" exhaust from the turbo mani back.....wackyracer...hook me up with a number....thx parker

I wonder if your distributor is damaged or your timing is off somehow.

You'll need a muffler in the place of your cat and pre-silencer. That or start budgeting for 'Exhaust too loud' tickets.

Quick and dirty way of telling if your cat is screwed is to unbolt it at manifold/header and see if it runs ok then. If it still runs like crap then you know you have engine troubles.

alright i decided to check the air intake...so i removed the air filter assembly and i plugged the hoses....i came to find out that it ran just fine....the exhaust overheat light is still on but other then that it runs smooth.....i reattached the filter assembly and it stalled out again....so from a process of elimination i found one of the hoses that is causing a vaccuum leak and its stopping the carb from getting air....thats the reason for the rough idle......

i do have a question tho....what is the unit with the pulley directly underneath the air filter assembly....it has one hose that runs from it to the air filter assembly.....is this my smog pump b/c if it is can i just go and remove it without the car having running problems.....thanks....parker

If your still running a cat I would not remove the smog pump. As for the bendable hose that comes of the air cleaner assembly, That is the preheater hose. I forgot to mention that in my other post.:)
