Help in Identity of car
 

How can I define what model of RX-7 I have? Its a 1979 RX-7 and I don't know and the insurance man is asking which one I have.

Well there's only two models in '79... S and GS... and for all intents and purposes they're identical, just minor things really.

So what might the differences be? Like passenger mirror? Air conditioning? Sun roof?

There were 2 models sold in the USA, the base model S and the top model GS.

The S had a 4 speed manual gear box, 165 tyres, and a two spoke steering wheel.

The GS had a 5 speed manual or 3 speed auto box, 185/70 tyres, side body mouldings, 4 spoke steering wheel and intermittent wipers.

Options for both include alloy wheels, air conditioning, and sun roof.

Late in 1979 a 'Limited Editio was sold in small quantities. It was a Gs with all the options as standard. The main feature was a special black paint and distinguishing badge. There were minor trim improvements like leather gear knob and digital clock. It only came with the 3 speed auto box.

nice description you helped me identify the car i am buying! Thx man. Any i dea on limited slip onthe 79 gs? And does it have disk brakes all the way around? And are they the small disks? Im more of a 2nd gen guy but have seen the light on the light 1st gen side of the fence.

1979 did not have lsd but its drivers might.

small disks at the front- 8.94 inch
drum at the back- 7.87 inch

I have also found out late 79 S model had auto as an option , but at a higher price than the GS because of the different cost of 4 and 5 speed manuals

No '79 came stock with limited slip or rear discs. Or, for that matter, electronic ignition. However, the car is 23 years old, who knows what's happened since '79?

Hey like i said im new to this gen so take it easy on me:). Well hopefully some nice soul put a lsd diffy in there and changed out the rear brakes to disk :) Hey it could happen!!! Or ill be doing that stuff myself soon.

One of the problems that sometimes happens in looking at vehicles is the maker often starts selling a model half way through the previous year. Thus, a vehicle sold in late 79 is an 80 model.

I have a 85 model manufactured in October 84, sold in December and registered on 1 January 85. Not that there is any difference in 84 or 85 models.

As stated above there was a '79 Limited. I owned one, but it had the 5 speed trans.No lsd. front discs, rear drums as stated above, digital clock (it didn't work so I purchased a new one from Mazda), Limited badging, special paint and a gray interior.

I just got my latest Victoria Brittish catalog and they now sell OEM replica decals, including the underside of the hood vacuum hose routing sticker and emissions sticker.

According to the catalog there are different part numbers for the 84 and 85 models. Suggesting, that at least in North America there are some minor differences in the Emissions control system.
