Help how to ????
how do I adjust my steering gear box I too much play
|
First off, check all your tie rods and the idler arm buching. That plastic bushing is the cause of most steering slop as they dont last long living next to the exhaust. Over on www.mazspeed.com in the facts section is a great writeup about how to adjust the box.

so where can get a new gear box from and how much will I pay for on.

Theres actually a large brass looking knob that should be close the the drivers side fender (probably 6 inches inside the engine bay) that you can tighten and that tightens the steering. It isn't a good fix if something is wrong, but if it just needs tightened up it's nice. If no one else replies with better info, I'll take a picture tomorrow.

No pics, but an excellent write-up.
http://www.mazspeed.com/steeringgear.htm Do a search; there's a few threads here that talk about steering gear adjustments. Just looking at a pic of the box won't tell you much. |
Alright, the pics aren't very good quality but they are huge. I took the pictures at night with a unsteady hand so they're blurry.
Ignore the grit, grime, rust and oil in my engine bay... http://webpages.charter.net/oxhadokenxo/steering/ Alright, as you can see in the pictures it is in relation to the dipstick and oil filter, I circled the knob in red and got one blurry close up. It isn't brass afterall : ) Mine has knicks in it where my dad used something to adjust it...I would honestly look for some tutorials (maybe the one in the previous post, I haven't read it) because as I said I did not adjust mine and I cannot tell you how to do it. All I know is my dad adjusted mine with that method and it worked. In fact it worked too good because he tightened it up so much it was nearly impossible to turn under 5mph. Of course I had him loosen it up some. This is on a 1984 GSL-SE with absolutely no power steering, don't know if there is any variance in other models... Man...I didn't realize my engine bay was so messy... |
hey thanks for the pic's I will see how to adjust it
