Help Help Help! Timing Help

Alright, here's the deal. I searched the archives and found how to set my timing. My problem is that i'm idling at 2k, not ~900 where I should be. I KNOW that my timing is off because of the fact that it's hard to start when cold and easy to start when hot. Here is what I have:

12a - I think it's a BP, but previous owner had no clue about anything
Holley 465 from RB
-intake
RB header
RB exhaust
magnacore 10mm wires
MSD coils
rats nest delete
PS delete
AC delete
E-Fan

I hooked up the timing light and checked my timing (hooked up power to my battery and the lead to the leading plug on housing one), and neither of my timing marks are in sight (I marked the leading notch with some nail polish). I turned the dizzy CCW and she almost died from lack of spark, so I think that's being caused by the mechanical advance taking effect at 2k rpm. She backfired a couple of times in a row while we were messing with the Dizzy. If anyone could help, that would be great. If anyone wants to volunteer to help me with the holley carb to bring my idle speed down, i'm around Ann Arbor, and i'll buy some beer or dinner or something for your troubles. Thanks alot for everything

Jim

You need to get the idle down around 12-1400 for the bp. Did you disconnect and plug the vac advance hoses, any vacuum leaks? The other option is to time it at 4k rpm, you will need to mark the pulley, but I don't recall offhand what total advance is supposed to be. When remarking the pulley, each mm is 1*.

I checked the timing with both the vacuum hooked up and without it hooked up. I'll try and snap some pictures tonight when I get home from work and studying to show how it all looks.
