help with diff!!
Im trying to swap my diff over from my old housing cuz is bent to a new housing that i got from ebay, i alredy pulled the rear end out the car and i am pulling it apart. and was tring to pull the axels out and the driver side came out no problem with a couple of hits from a hammer but im having problems with the passenger side that it does not want to come out even though i hit it with a sledge hammer and it still wont come out. that is the only thing keeping me from taking the diff apart, i wanted to know if some body knows how to take this out or take it apart any help will be apreciated.

Pulling an axle out...
The way I did it is by using a body puller hammer from a body shop. It is basically a long rod with a hook on the end. The rod has a weight that slides on it and stops against the end of the rod. You hook one end onto the side of the axle, while holding the other end. Then by sliding the weight over the length of the rod and hitting the stop at the end, the axle is slowly forced out of the housing.
The tool is mainly used to pull dented doors, b pillars, etc by body shops. I borrowed one from my friend who works at a body shop. Hope this helps. |
I'm not sure down in the states, but up here in Beaver Land we can rent them for free from some places. Another metal that has seemed to work with some people is that your spare tire out, put the lug bolts on only 1/2 way and pull on it. I tried all the methods above and the only one that worked for both mine is the slide hammer.

I have used to use a broom handle inserted from the other end to tap the axle out with a hand sledge. Course that was on a 59 Chevy, but it may work with our diff too.
