Help Car Died today!!!

i have a 85 12A with 148K miles with no modifications. I was driving home when all of a sudden the engine felt like it ran out of gas. I have replaced the fuel filter about 5000 miles ago so thats no the problem. After I came to a stop i tried to restart it and it would turn over, but it wasn't getting fuel. I have good spark and I have a full tank of gas. The only thing it could be is a fuel issue, but I'm just not sure. Has this happened to anybody and if so is there anywhere I should look first before going to a shop. Thanks for your time, Shaun

Shaun, does the tachometer move when you are cranking the engine?

tallbozo 05-08-07 11:20 PM

Yeah, the tach dances at about 1200rpms. I have a new battery and I checked the coils and grounds so I'm nearly positive it isn't electrical

In the FSM that is availble thru trochoids profile is the test procedure to activate the fuel pump withour cranking the engine. You need to see if any fuel reaches the carb thru this procedure.

Just dribble some fuel down the carb when cranking.

I sprayed starter fluid in the carb already and it did nothing

Can you hear the fuel pump running? Check the fuse yet?

This is a 85 model. The fuel pump does not come on until you start cranking the engine.
Thats why it needs to be bypassed and checked.;)

I got the car home just now so I will be testing the fuel pump out tomorrow. Thanks for the help and I will let you know what I find out.

Ok. I knew the SE's were hooked up this way. Now I know the 85 carbed 12A is like this as well. Will look this up in the FSM later. Thanks for the info.

Check the engine fuse in the fuse block under the dash.

Sounds like it is time to upgrade the fuel pump.
