HEI MODULE timing

So i get the module installed and i have sprak and so i think that ill be able to get it started to problem...WRONG..... .so i make sure i have the timming set...still nothign.. i dont know whats going on, can any one help me please. i need it !!

gsl-se addict 02-13-06 02:33 PM

I am not sure if I fully understand the question. So you have spark, correct? Are you saying that it won't start or does it start but you can't the timing right?

zduford 02-13-06 02:49 PM

it wont even start! lol

as well i have spark on the leading and trailing.

What is the stock setting for airfuel mixture? cause i have it set at 1 1/2 out...

gsl-se addict 02-13-06 02:53 PM

Did it run before the HEI modules? Do you have fuel? How is compression? Could also be flooded.

zduford 02-13-06 02:56 PM

lol yeah... thats what i thoght.

It was running be4, slightly...the triailing wasnt working, thats why the HEI unit is now being used.

Already unflooded it, dump oil down it. and still nothign. I have fuel, floats are half full. compression...is good.

im thinking of just pulling the airfuel mix way out and seeing if that does nethign..

The trailing makes little difference, so if it was running bad before, something else is going on. Bad trailing can cause more problems with 84/85 cars, especially the GSL-SEs. The 84/85 cars run the fuel pump based on the trailing signal, so if it isn't working, the car will usually start, run for a few seconds and then die.

I would just go through and start eliminating things. Search around and see where the carb screws shiould be set, listen to the compression pulses or use a tester, verify fuel pressure/flow, make sure the tally mark on the distributor and the mark on the front pulley is where it is suppose to be and so on. Are the plugs wet with fuel? If there is no fuel, you can pour a bit down the carb barrels and see if it will start. Good luck.

I've never heard of someone using an HEI unit on a 1st gen (Unless I'm thinking of something else). How did you set it up? There may be something in the way you set it up that the spark isn't happening when it should.

More info. Can't troubleshoot without knowing how it was running before and what you did to it, and how it's running now.

How did you set the timing if you can't get it running? How does it run now? Does it sound like it's going to catch? Are your plugs wet when you take them out?

Try running w/o trailing to see if you can get it running. Trailing is only for emissions control anyway, you can run without it for testing.

Make sure you're not confusing leading and trailing

Make sure your plugs don't come out wet, if they do, deflood it properly (rotaries don't deflood themselves)

If you're getting air, fuel and spark you should be good to go, as long as the spark is happening at the right time. This is where we need to know how you set things up.

Also, for the fuel mixture screw, that's default to 3.5 turns out from the carb, but even all the way in it will still start. Just won't run well.

Jon: There have been a few guys that use the HEI modules. They are a GM type ignitor. They basically replace the J-109. The nice thing about them is that they are cheap and available at most parts stores.

But as Jon says, we need more info to really help. There are many possiblities why a car won't start. Give use as much as you know, then start eliminating the different possibilities.

well i set it up as per the faq. and i was getting spark. so that was wired up right . and when i threw a timming light on last night i was "close....eheh" not on target but close. but it didnt even sound like it was trying to start then.

But i just went out....pulled the airfule mixture out to 3.5 turns...and it sounded like it was going to catch.. i just needed to get all the oil out.. but then the batt died...( ive killed it, the batt i mean after 2 years of draining, and charging.

But here is some more info:

The car has never ran 100% since i bought it 2 years ago.
But i rebuilt the carb just recently, put it on and it would start up, but not runproperly...just be4 the cat it would get red hot.
Umm... im not to sure what other info you need. but ill let ya know when i get the battery up again..

I don't understand how you can throw a timing light on when it's not started. You can't exactly time it at 250rpm while cranking!

If your cat is turning red, that's really a bad sign. When mine did that it was because it was totally clogged. I came up with every other reason for it, until I finally replaced it and realized what the problem was. It was clogged, but I could still feel exhaust coming out the back!

Also you could be running really really lean (1.5 turns will do that).

zduford 02-13-06 03:52 PM

aight..... so i might just have to buy a chunck of straight pipe and weld it on....think the stock muffler would stand that....well actually.. i think it should, i mean ive had some good back fires come outta her.

So putting a timming light on while cranking wont work ?......

vipernicus42 02-13-06 04:10 PM

I don't *think* so, it might... but might not be accurate.

Can you take any pictures of the HEI setup you did, or post the link that you found on how to do it, I want more info there before we go chopping up your exhaust

zduford 02-13-06 04:13 PM

hehehe:P all right ill go take a few pics right now. (Y)

ignitor

It may be better to remove the J109 and connect to the VR pickup directly rather than having the J109 fire the HEI.

zduford 02-14-06 02:33 PM

Lol yeah i forgot to mention that..... whoops.. i gutted the j-109 and basically made a jumper.
