headlights with an eletrical problem

my 83 gsl headlights go up and down fine. when i turn the dims on they dont work and when i put the brights on they work when they want to. for instance, i live near the wisconsin dells and i drove to chicago one night and my brights worked all the way there. two nights later i was on my way home and the lights wouldnt stay on after 20 miles of driving. so i held the the switch back the rest of my 3 hour drive. that is when i decided i have had it. i have checked the wiring and it all seems to be fine. no cracks in the wires or anything. could i have a bad switch do u think or is there a fusable link somewhere? i dont know so pleas help me if you can. thanx

The switches like to burn out.

If you feel competent enough, you can disassemble the switch and clean all the contacts. This is what I did when my high beams started randomly cutting out, accompanied by an electrical odor. All is fine now.

A new combination switch is hideously expensive. Some quality time with tools and a Scotch-Brite pad does wonders.

ok is there any specific way to start to disasemble the switch?
