Having problems with TPS adjustment after doing the TB mod.

I pulled the upper & lower intake on my GSL-SE,
replaced all the the gaskets, switched to pre-mix, and did the throttle body mod.

Now i'm having trouble getting the TPS setting right.
I've done this before on my FC, so I should know what i'm doing,
but something's not right.

I ohm'ed the TPS,.. it appears to be good.

It seems like to get the TPS set to spec, I have to back the TPS adjustment screw allmost all the way out. Which I think opens the trottle plates too?,
and leaves my car wanting to idle at 4000rpm..

I'm sitting here at work thinking of what to try next.
'considering ovalizing the holes on the TPS bracket so I can move it slightly farther away from the throttle linkage.
So that I can tighten the TPS adjust screw back down and re-adjust the TPS.
Does anyone think this will work, or have any other suggestions?

Or,
Is it possible for a TPS to be within the ohm specs,.. but still not be any good?
It sweeps clean through the range without blowing open anywhere..
I actually tried another spare TPS I have. same thing happened.

Is this happening because I ditched the secondary double throttle plates?

I know others have done this to their SE's, anyone else have this problem?

sounds like you have a big vacuum leak. the upper to lower intake gasket is a problem area, also any loose or not connected lines would do it also. Did you change any vacuum lines? Not the safest way but a can of brake cleaner will get you started in the right direction.

I have all new gaskets, and I tried the vac hose in the ear method of searching for leaks, and didn't find any.
I've also double checked that all the vac lines are hooked up.

I just double checked the vac diagram and I'm pretty sure I have all the vac lines hooked up right.

I've tried various things like unpluging & blocking off the BAC, and unplugging blocking off the vent & vacc solenoids, none of which made any difference. Hooked it all back up though, so right now the car is stock minus the TB mod and OMP blockoff.

here's a diagram

edit: this damn thing won't work

I got it.

and your sure you have all the throttle linkages set up right? cruise control isn't holding the throttle open? try removing both cables and see what happens

13angryB's 07-14-06 03:14 AM

I forgot to mention that I no longer have the C/C in the car,
I've checked the throttle cable cable & its loose, I'll try unhooking it completely tomorrow.
I don't think that's it though.

It's gotta be a bad TPS.
with the car warmed up and turned off, I've tried both the two light method, and the volt meter method.
whenever it has one light on one off, the car will idle at 4000rpm, because I have to set the TPS screw out so far to get it to have one light.
If I tighten the TPS set screw down at all the idle starts jumping up & down quickly from 1100 to 1800.

Is this a bad TPS? i've tried two, but it is possible they're both bad. I don't know.
When I check the ohms it's like this,..
The TPS sweeps from 1 to 5 ohms on one side and from 5 to 1 ohms on the other side.
That's how it's supposed to be right?

-Thanks for the help

I would check to see if the idle drops down when you manually close the throttle. Very possible that your throttle plates are sticking. In other words the linkage could be sticking due to mis alignment, carbon, or being bent.

Thanks Doc,
I'll try taking the TB of again & cleaning the linkage some more & make sure it's not sticking.
I did hit it with degreaser & carb cleaner pretty thoroughly allready though.

-When doing the TB mod should it be necessary to re-adjust the trottle stop after removing the secondary double throttle plates?

Rx-7Doctor 07-14-06 03:26 PM

I believe that it is recommended that the throttle stop be adjusted when you have removed the cold start and bacv. You might want to recheck the FAQ'S on this.
When you get done fixing the problem then you can put the S4 intake and T/body on her. There is alot more breathing thru that bigger T/Body.

13angryB's 07-14-06 03:35 PM

ok, I'll try that.
I do have a spare S4 upper intake aswell, so maybe i'll just put that on & see if it helps.
Thanks,
-Chris

You have to change the LIM also, the S4 UIM will not directly bolt to the Se lower. There are some other small mods to do. If and when you decide to do that pm me and i'll walk you thru the steps.

13angryB's 07-14-06 03:46 PM

I'll have to dig around in the garage to see If I have the S4 lower.

I appreciate the help.
I'll PM you later on this evening.
