H6024 Headlamp
 
I just bought a pair of Hella H6024 H4 headlamp conversions and when the 3 mounting tabs are lined up they are sideways. This means my cut offs run vertically instead of horizontally.
My old sealed beams were lined up fine. This is on a 1980 SA.

Have others run into this issue before?
Is there an easy fix?

One suggestion is to get the Black Dragon headlight harness. The harness uses the stock headlight connector to trigger relays that supply voltage directly from the battery. The factory voltage is supplied through the ignition switch and really puts a drain on the voltage. They also have glass 7" round headlight that can accept different types of bulbs.

Thank you, but I've already purchased housings and electrically they seem fine (I'm not using any crazy high wattage bulbs anyway). My issue is the 7" round housings are physically mounted 90 degrees off from what they should be, hence the horizontal cut off being vertical.

Seems odd. Many years ago I had cibie z beams and don't recall any problem.

I got similar from BD and didn't have any issues. Post some detailed pictures of the install and
maybe we can see an issue with it?

The H4 in the middle of the bulb is on it's side? They should look like this.

Yes, exactly.
I will grab some pictures when I get the chance, but there is nothing strange with the wiring. It was literally plug and play.

You do know that the connector on the vehicle wiring side can turn so that it is oriented correctly?

I'm not sure I understand.
The wiring and the connector are loose/free and can be oriented any which way on my car. The lamp doesn't "socket" into where it sits giving the orientation.

There are three depressions where the headlamp sits that match with three tabs on the circumference of the headlamp that give the correct orientation. The only way the tabs match my depressions is when the lamp is 90 degrees out.

I will just take the thing apart further and MacGyver it since it doesn't seem like a common issue at all.

If a sealed beam unit fits correctly, then the Hella (or any other H4 Euro code unit) has to fit. They all use the same protrusions on the back of the lamp, and the same slots or depressions on the mounting frame. Simple as that. It has to work, if you think the H4 won't fit then there is something else going on. Look @ the back of the lamps & you'll see the matching protrusions on both types of lamps. When H4s are mounted correctly, they look like the above photo with the H4 designation upright. Trust me, I've fitted dozens of sets as a tech, they always fit on all cars. Let us know what you figure out.

Is the metal bucket installed correctly? It is held in place by a spring and two adjuster screws. Adjusters are on the bottom and inboard side. The spring and hole that it hooks into are on the upper outboard side.

Hi Bruce,
That's what was confusing me so much! My sealed beams fit fine, but when compared side by side the tabs are in different places.
Work has been busy so I couldn't grab a picture, but everything looks like it's been mounted fine.... except it's 90 degrees out; the driver side counter clockwise and the passenger clockwise.
74rx4, I'm going to take a look, maybe the previous owner picked up an oddball pair of sealed beams and tweaked the bucket to fit?

I will definitely post pictures when I figure this all out.... it's getting weird driving with light only in the middle of my path.

So I snapped a few pictures.
It seems my indents don't even have the same "clocking" as the previously posted pictures.

I also checked again, my sealed beams fit fine.

It looks like if I swap left an right buckets, it will result in the correct clocking of the dents and tabs, but the hole for the spring will be missing. I will just drill me a new one I think.

I will try this tomorrow, for now I've gotta lesson plan, mark and make uninteresting stuff, interesting.

Any advise or input would be greatly appreciated.... although it will be a small hole, I'm not keen on cutting into my baby.

You got it. The buckets are switched. Your right side looks like my left side turned 90 degrees. The bottom adjuster on your right side should be the inboard adjuster on the left side. The spring holes should be in the right places when you rotate the buckets and switch sides. Your sealed beams weren't focused correctly either. You should enjoy your new lights.

Ah ha!

Fixed it, pictures to come. Just incase others discover this thread in the future; the buckets were swapped. That's all.
