GSL-SE Wheels and Tire Sizes
 

I thought this was in a faq in teh stcky... but i couldnt find it.

just wondering what wheel and tire sizes fit in a stock set up?

teh stock SE rim, whats teh largest aspect ratio and widest tire can you fit onto it without rubbing the fender wells?


would a rim with the dimesntions: 4x114.3mm (4.5”), 45mm offset work on an 'SE?

any wheel/tire sizing information would be appreciated.

and if it IS in a faq in teh sticky section i missed, then please point it out and i'll shut up :)

You'll hit the bottom of the springs first, at least I did. 215-16's. We had to get 1/4" spacers and twist the springs all the way to their seat stops just to clear. Tires came with the Volvo S40 BBS wheels but when replaced I'll get 205's just to prevent accidents. I haven't driven it yet because I haven't been able to replace the rear axle lug studs with longer ones but I can't get the tires to hit the front fenders with body weight. I'll add the aspect ratio when I get to work today, it's at the shop and I forget.

The tires I just mentioned are 215/50-16 and on a stock suspended SE in good order it's very tight. I would go with 205/50-16 next time.

17x7 40mm offset with a 205-40-17 will fit without rubbing even with lowering springs

there are 235 width tires on the back of my stock SE wheels. they look kind of silly.

they are just too tall and too wide... i want to run 205s all the way around.

when you compare the stock SE's rim weight alone weighing in around 10lbs, I will never go any larger than a 16" on my SE because of the bigger the wheel, the more the spining mass, the slower you accelerate. I have 15" on there now with 205/55R15's speedo reads correctly but hard to find a Toyo Proxes4 205/55 in the middle of nowhere when I had a flat...

stock wheel weighs more then 10lbs, and if you buy a quality 17" wheel it won't be more then 20lbs, more like 17lbs

I run 235-45-17 on the back of my car and it doesn't rub even with the suspension techniques springs, next set I will go with a 245-45-17

Remember that all tires aren't created equal. Manufacturers take a liberal license with making their tires wider or narrower than the nominal spec. Hoosiers, for example, run very wide. I'm running 205/50-15 F and 225/50-15 R. These sizes will fit, even with my Hoosier race tires. If I were to stick to a narrower brand (like my Dunlop street tires), I might be able to fit a bigger nominal size tire -- even though the actual size would be the same.
