GSL-SE specific new-purchase questions
 

hey guys i did a quick search for this, but it was becoming a pain in the ass with the 20 second gaps between searches... so i figure i'll ask...

i'm in the process of upgrading to a 84 GSL-SE from a 83 GSL that i had for 3 years. so i am a total rotard; i know the basics. i'm just looking for some post-purchase things to check/clean/fix as a pre-emptive measure.

i was thinking i would go through and make sure my throttle cable is lubed and the linkage is adjusted correctly, and to verify that the 5+6 ports are doing their thing alright (i'm 99% sure they're working fine). but i can't really think of anything else as i am super-new to the 13b and fuel injection.

also, as far as the intake system goes.. would i stand to gain any performance by switching to some sort of short-ram system with a cone, or does the stock system work fine for a stock-ported motor? i do think the underhood area looks very attractive stock, and i would only consider mucking around with that stuff if it would help a good bit.

i don't plan on doing anything ludicrous to this car, just a RB exhaust system. it's such a nice shell that i'd feel bad pulling stuff out and replacing things all willy nilly. hell, i even like the stock suspension the way it is. it's nice and comfy (as opposed to my former 83's).

finally - computer question. i've heard good things about microtech ecus from a couple of the local fellas. the primary use of the car will be shooting over the cascade passes here in WA during the spring/summer. i'm thinking that due to the drastic altitude change in the pass runs, it would be beneficial to invest in a microtech to help keep the a/f ratio reasonable up high. would a mod like this be worth it, or will the stock EGI system work fine? my carb'd 12a didn't take too kindly to stevens as it was getting way too much gas at the top, even with the tired fuel pump.

Yea, a better air intake is very useful. Use a 2nd generation Air Flow Meter and run a K&N cone filter in front of hte radiator. Takes a little ingenuity but from what i hear it works great

2nd Gen AFM mod is a lot of work for what you have to do - even though you may not like it, search to find more information. It requires taking apart a good, working SE AFM and transplanting insides to the larger Gen 2 AFM - this is not a direct swap. Shorter intake run will help, getting it cool will help even more.

As to altitude compensation on the SE's, they are equipped with a air pressure sensor under the passenger floorboard attached to the ECU rack - this is used to compensate EFI settings to work at higher altitudes and works very well to maintain stoichiometry for the A/F mixture.

SE's are very rewarding cars to drive and you'll find a wealth of information here about how to keep them running well. There are a few of us that tune these from time to time and restore them, so run a search on 'SE' to find more information.

Some simple things to take care of first that'll help down the road is checking fuel injector hoses and the fuel injectors for leaks - this can lead to serious and dangerous problems down the road if not corrected. Other than that, your experience with other RX-7's will be useful when troubleshooting this car. Throttle body problems and surging are very common, moreso in colder climates and seasons.
