MN New project

So last week I picked up a new engine for my 84 GSL-SE. The website I ordered it from listed it as a stock series 4 turbo, but when I received the engine it became clear that is is not stock. Now I get to enjoy figuring out what all I have.

The engine appears to be in good shape, I inspected the apex seals through the spark plug holes and they are all intact. There is also a solid "woosh" sound for each face of each rotor. Ill be slapping the transmission and starter back on this weekend to do a ghetto compression test, hopefully it looks good.

The harness is intact, but I am missing the mass airflow sensor and a few other small items.

I apologize, the camera on my phone kinda sucks and my camera battery was dead so some of the pictures are a little blurry.

First thing I noticed was the ECU. It looks like it is the stock ECU, but it has been modified with a new chip (I opened it up to verify this).

After searching around I found a company named Dtech based out of new zealand. Has anybody heard of these guys before? I want to find out if I can flash this chip again if needed or if I should just pick up a megasquirt.

Next up is the Flywheel/clutch. These are clearly not stock, but I'm not sure who made them.

The wear surface on the flywheel is not replaceable, and it is not in great shape, but I think it is useable (at least for now). The clutch is a 6 puck style with springs, and the pressure plate is separate from the wear surface.

Now the turbo. It looks like a stock unit to me, but honestly I have no idea.

I plan on having this rebuilt. The shaft does not have much play at all, but it had some dirt and some water inside of it.

The fuel injectors are Denso's and they have the number 199500-0830 on all 4 of them. The Denso website does not list any fuel injectors for Rx-7s, so I have no idea if these are original equipment or not.

I plan on having these tested and cleaned before I try and use them.

And some pictures of the setup I am currently running

I am posting a link to this on the 2nd gen forums as well, I suspect they will have some information on this also.

It does look like a stock S5 turbo (hitachi) But, It has a after market wastegate actuator that and I have never seen a stock hitachi turbo to say A/R .60 on the compressor housing..

I am guessing that it is a hybid turbocharger kinda like the knightsports kits..

As for your clutch It looks alot like a OS giken flywheel/clutch assembly.. Vary nice score!!!

Update on the project so far:

I have been traveling a lot for work lately so I haven't been able to get as much done as I would like, but I have been collecting information and parts.

So far, I'm sure that the clutch/flywheel is the OS giken RE-TurboFB posted (thanks for the info!)http://www.osgiken.net/products/supersingle.html

The injectors look to be greddy 720cc
http://www.frsport.com/GReddy-135000...ACH_p_791.html

The turbo looks exactly like the knight sports one listed on page 27 of this catalog, although I'm not 100% positive on this yet.

I'm pretty sure the ECU has been tuned by this Dtech company I found that is based out of New Zealand, but I am still working on confirming this, or finding out if anyone else will have the ability to tune it for my setup (will I even need to do this, assuming its tuned for the parts that I have?)

So far all I have been able to accomplish is taking off the intake and turbo and cleaning it up. I have all new gaskets to put it back together this weekend if I can find time for it.

I also ordered a Walbro 255 fuel pump, after searching around the forums it seems like this should work just fine for this application.

And a replacement intercooler from mishimoto. It might be a little overkill, but I wanted something a little bigger than the stock one that came with the engine.

Also, I decided to finally replace my old radiator, as the fins were pretty beat up on the front side of it. I found an upgraded 3 row aluminum unit on ebay, so I picked that up and it should arrive middle of next week.

I have been looking into an ignition system for this, because the factory coils and ignition modules were not included, but I am a little bit stuck. Everything I have read on the forums say to stick with the stock ignition system because it is awesome, but I am having a hard time finding coils and ignition modules for a reasonable price. I am thinking I might have to try my luck at a you pull it junkyard, but I'm thinking it may be hard to find.

They also did not include the MAF sensor with the engine, so Ill need to pick up one of these as well (maybe off this car I may find in said junkyard??)

Other than that I think all I need to get is a boost controller, figure out if I can use the S4 OMP with my GSL-SE front cover, and decide if I can get away with simply getting the S4 drive shaft yoke welded on to my current drive shaft. I plan on putting everything together and running the engine on the stand before I swap it into the car, to avoid as much downtime as possible. If I get time to work on it this weekend Ill post some pics of the progress

So I got a little bit of work done this weekend, the biggest bit was getting a compression test done. It checks out pretty good with 92PSI on the front and 95 on the rear. I also got the intake cleaned up and painted, and got the turbo bolted back on.

Here are a couple of pics I snapped with my phone at the end of the day. the camera kinda sucks, but you get the idea. Also, don't laugh at my redneck engine stand, my store bought one wouldn't support the engine with the transmission bolted on.

Another question about the ignition, if I get an aftermarket ecu, will I need ignition modules, or will it be able to fire the coils on its own?
