Grocery list of parts

Like the title says I'm putting together a grocery list of parts I will need to finish some projects I want to get done during the fall/winter months. It pretty much includes brakes, suspension, and interior. Everything is of course original and in really bad shape so each project is a complete tear down and rebuild, nothing can be salvaged.

Each project will get done at different times so I'm not buying everything in one go.
When it comes time to do what I need to get done I would like all of the parts there so it's not sitting in the garage pissing my parents off any longer than it needs to. :D

Listed under each category I have all of the parts I think I need, but I'm sure I'm going to miss something and that's what I would like you guys to help me with. This is a super noob thread, but I just want to be prepared. :worship: please help if you can.

Brakes:

Brake pads and shoes
Caliper rebuild kit
Brake shoe spring (top and bottom)
New rotors (what would you guys recommend for a street car? mine are severely pitted)
Wheel bearings (inner and outer)
Brake lines
brake grease
Dust caps

Suspension: (not my strong spot)

KYB shocks
New springs?
Polyurethane bushings (front and rear?)
Moog idler arm

Interior:

Seat recover kit (does it include foam?)
What can I do with the steering wheel? Mine has a good amount of wear on it. Should I buy a leather nardi?
My carpet has a tear in it from braking, what kits match the wine interior the best?
My rear view mirror has some of the chrome reflectant missing around the edges what's my best option for a replacement?

Misc:
I need part numbers for the parts, I looked in the parts book and I can't figure it out.

Hood prop holder (mine broke years ago)
Nylon Horn button spacers (I have washers wrapped in electrical tape right now being used)
Hood rubber bump stops (My hood corners love to fly at high speeds)

I would greatly appreciate it if you guys can help me. :icon_tup:

Rotors O.E.M. The old ones lasted a good couple of decades right? Seems like a good replacement. Just my $.02. ;)

As far as bushings go, you can get a full kit from Re-speed I believe. I've been eyeing it and will be getting it once it cools down outside. If your end-links on your sway bar were as bad as mine, you won't be disappointed when those get replaced. But those are included in the Re-speed kit.

I just read that you need a hood bump stop and prop rod holder.

Those parts are pretty universal. You should be able to locate them at any auto parts store.

j9fd3s 08-23-12 10:49 AM

the Mazda number for the hood rod clip is 9971-50-702

the steering wheel spacer things come in a kit, 8871-32-740B

the hood bump stops won't fix the hood fluttering, that is actually caused by the glue between the hood skin and hood frame drying out. you can re glue the hood, i've used silicon, liquid nails, etc its a little messy but if you go around all the openings on the bottom, the hood will sound like a mercedes when you close it, and not a trash can.

in the rear suspension you don't want poly bushings, due to the way the thing has to pivot the ideal material is something softer than new stock rubber.

Red.. we will let you know how the Energy Suspension/KYB Shocks/Intrax Springs work out as we are doing my son's 84 right now with that exact setup..... Have a feeling its going to be a ROUGH
ride hehehehe

Check Rockauto.com for a lot of those parts.

You will not need a 'special' Mazda RX retailer.

Redliner223 08-23-12 07:02 PM

I'm just making sure I got everything I need before I do anything. Hate to get half way through changing out my shocks and there's an "oops I forgot that $.05 bushing", then I'm sitting there waiting for that part to come in. (I don't want to be that guy)
Rockauto is my go to place for most of my goods.

Brakes - master cylinder rebuild kit

Suspension - outer tie rod ends

Interior - I know black dragon has carpet kits
And the rearview mirror would be a hard item to find. Every 7 I've seen has that same issue. Maybe a snap over replacement (even though they look dumb in my opinion) or you'd have to get a window mount glued on then use a different mirror and cut the old one off of the dome light.

Just some things I would add and some info.

j9fd3s 08-24-12 10:40 AM

i've only done side mirrors, but with those Mazda literally just uses a piece of glass and paints one side, so IF you can get the mirror apart, all it needs is fresh paint

A local guy has the carpet form Black Dragon, and he hates it.
It's pretty disgusting to look at and doesn't match the original color, it's way brighter and more red than maroon.
I have one of those broadview mirrors on it right now and I like it, but it's soooo huge compared to the petite interior. I even bought the smallest one they offered.

For the carpet kit, go with stockinteriors.com . Their sets are much higher quality than the BlackDragon ones. My friend Marc put one in his FB and it was high enough quality that I decided to put one in Project Naomi.

Has anyone used the seat kits from Racing Beat?
How well do they fit and do they come with new foam or just the new seat cover?

Racing Beat sells covers from Seatz Mfr. Here's a direct link: Seatz, Ready-to-Install Auto Upholstery Kits.

A shop specializing in interior work, do all the required fabrication, including the foam and frame stuff along with sewing (or buying and installing) the covers. RB just sell the covers and are not equipped to be an interior shop. The covers are good quality and match for OEM. The biggest difference is they use a larger diameter piping (round cord) than the original factory ones. American sizes vs metric most likely.

I had the same problem with the rearview mirror.

I found a guy that does mirror re-silvering locally, and got mine fixed that way.

As it happens, I had an extra one redone as well.

If you're interested I can send pics.

If you need a better mirror housing, I have these as well.

You can PM me if interested.

Here's a link to the steps for removing the mirror from the housing (it's a Z-car, but the mirrors/housings are essentially identical):

Classic Zcar Club - Rearview Mirror Restoratiom

The attached photos show an "old" mirror next to a resilvered one (front and back comparisons).

Toughest part for me was finding a shop that resilvers mirrors...

Redliner223 09-07-12 08:24 AM

How much did it cost to resilver your mirror?

Japanese Nostalgic Car • View topic - Bought myself a KGC10 1972 1 owner!!!!

3/4 way down the page the guy shows how to take apart the mirror.
He had a new mirror cut for his mirror. I can go either way, thanks demongo.

Alright I'm pulling my hair out over here.
I'm starting to order my brake parts from Rock Auto ('bout time).
They have sooooooooo many different options and I'm indecisive, just can't make up my mind.
Things that I though would be a simple choice have stopped me dead in my tracks.
Here are some links to what I'm trying to pick between.

Rotors:

Wheel bearings:

^^^ I have no idea for these, some say race and others don't I just don't see a difference between them. Can someone fill me what the difference is.

Calipers:

I'm just double checking my homework here. I depend on these a lot and I don't want them to fail.
I appreciate all your help guys, you have no idea. :DDDD

Skip rebuilding the calipers and or master cylinder.

Skip rebuilding the calipers and or master cylinder. I bought new from Kragen all four calipers, the brake master cylinder and the clutch and slave.

Buy the stainless steel brake lines (I believe it takes 5 for an 84, 85) from Mazdatrix or I think Pineapple.

DOT Stainless Steel Brake Lines

I think Pineapple has the SS line for the clutch. It's worth it for the brakes and clutch. Since your car is over 20 years old, you should be replacing the rubber brake lines so go SS, it makes a world of difference. New calipers were only slightly more expensive than rebuilt ones.

I bought a new clutch master and slave a year ago and when I did my tranny work, I pushed the slave piston all the way in to secure it with wire ties so I wouldn't have to bleed the clutch. Well, pushing in the slave piston ruined the rubber seal so I had to use up a rebuild kit to get it going. At least the clutch piston wasn't worn down to a 45 degree angle. You should always carry a clutch slave rebuild kit with you.

When you do the brakes, Ebay has the rotors for an SE for cheap from brakelabs, you're rotors don't look too good.

Put in new front bearings and seal while you're at it.
Moog idler arm, good idea.

I've got Konis on all four corners (they were free from a salvage yard RX-7 racer) but I don't think they make them any more.

Get all the trim like the hood holder and hatch struts from a U pull it type yard.

Redliner223 10-16-12 07:17 AM

I just want to know is
1.) why one rotor is an inch larger and it's twice as much and is getting the larger rotor worth it?
2.) Why are there a million different bearings? Which do I need?
3.) How can I tell if a caliper will fit? There are some numbers on the original one, but I don't know what they mean.

I was able to pull a hood holder from a Rx7 that was rear ended a couple weeks ago. I was given the opportunity to trade what I needed but when I arrived the car was an '85, so that was all I could use.

Redliner223 10-17-12 03:04 PM

Alright I'm slowly finding my answers, but I still don't know what I should get for wheel bearings.
I picked these rotors out because it's the same size as the ones already on the car:

And I just picked one of the calipers by a reputable company.
