Good price for a 12a

i saw a 12a engine on ebay, contacted the guy and he said he'd sell it for 100 plus shipping. i think it had bad compression in the rear rotor, i'd just like to get one and play around w/ porting it and stuff. the compression could be fixed w/ a rebuild and just replacing the apex seals, and checking all the specs on the springs and seals going by the service manual (if i'm not wrong, someone please correct me i'm a newb!) anyways, does 100 sound like a reasonable price for this? i just need a bare engine, i can transfer stuff over to it if it looks like it'll be worth it. i'm in the process of rebuilding the carb right now. i'm going to talk to the guy later tonight, i'll post more about what shape its in. thanks in advance.

Rebuild kits run over $400, right?

I would think $100 is a bit high for a dead motor.

People are telling me my RUNNING 12a with mid to low compression is worth $100....

Nah, 100 is a good price. Only rarely will you see anything less than that. Junkyards sell "condition unknown" engines for like $400 around here...

It's a good way to learn and rebuild. If I had that good of a deal up here I'd jump on it. Good rebuild kits are like 1g though!

if the seal springs meet specs (as well as seals), they can be re-used, right? i really like the way these engines work, mechanical stuff really interests me, i love takin shit apart. if i get it i may put in hardend stationary gears to take it past 8500... :) can the stock nikki handle mild intake/exhaust porting, or would i need a higher flow carby? i think i'd need a new fuel pump too, right?

This is just the rotor kit, but it's listed as a rebuild kit....

Last time I priced a rebuild kit it was $1300, back in '98. I wasn't sure if they are the same price now.

If the engine Eat an Apex seal, You will need a new housing and rotor for the rear. Your best bet would be to buy a running one and build it, Like Farleytron"s engine. My self I would not pay shipping to get a Dead engine, Of course I do have 3 Dead one's and two live ones. The yards here will sell you a condition unknown for $100 you pull it.

i just talked to the guy not too long ago, he says that the engine has good compression front and rear. he's going to get me some pics tomorrow, when i get them i'll post them. i think i'm gonna go for it as long as i can clear it by "the boss" (my gf). thanks for all the replies!

Be Careful. Remember that when One Apex Seal goes there is still one chamber that makes compression. With a Standard Piston Tester you will still show compresson Even thought the Rotor and Housing are now Junk.

I saw some rebuild kits priced at about $800 on racingbeat.com and atkins rotary.

There's a member on here that can get rebuild kits for under 500. I think he works for mazda or something.

got an email from the guy today, the engine has 106k on it (supposedly), good compression, i got pics from him and it looks okay (someone has painted the housings tho...) he said he can ship it freight for 77.07 from arizona. i think i'm gonna go for it, at the very least i'll have an extra engine to blow if i don't feel like porting it :). it doesn't have a dizzy, air pump or carby or anything extra, but i think 100 is a good base price.

Moonchopper 11-10-04 08:50 PM

$100 is a pretty damn good price, if you ask me. A parts car WITHOUT the engine usually goes for $200-$300.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=363616 There's the guy that can get you rebuild kits for el cheapo.
