Good Package?

So I have to get new tires for my FB this coming spring, but i was thinking why not grab some new rims too since my stock ones are shot as is, they need a good re-clear coating. So I think I've picked out a good package. What do you guys think (tires, rims, and is it a good deal?)

For the rims I'd go with the typical Konig Rewinds (15x7) in gunmetal with a brushed lip:

And for Tires I was going to pick up these HANKOOK TIRE VENTUS-HRII H405 (205 50 R15) :

The total package shipped to me (not mounted) would be $706.00. what do ya'll think? Oh and the car is a dover white 1984 GS

I have these wheels, just not the gunmetal color. They're pretty light, I put one on the bathroom scale when I bought them and it came to 15.5 pounds.. That said, I had to drive the fb throughout last winter (the only winter those wheels have seen) and even though I washed the car once a week or better, the clearcoat on the polished lips pealed and look like pitted aluminum. This was especially bad on the rear wheels. The gunmetal would look good against your white 84 though.. the tires look pretty agressive, I have a new set of toyo proxies that I've been pleased with so far, but my car is in storage for the winter and your post describes your gs as a daily driver, I hope you have a spare set of snow tires.

Do you guys salt you're roads? Maybe that ate the clear coat? I know salt can do some nasty things to cars...

I almost bought the Rewinds--until I realized that everyone had them. Plus the width I needed did not come with the offset I needed. From the above post about the quality, I would be a little scared unless you plan on changing out your wheels every couple of years.

I like the Rota RB wheel but don't know much about it. Wonder if it's better than the Rewinds?
It's not good when the clearcoat comes off that quick. Seems like there would be a warranty.

FunK73 12-11-09 11:40 AM

Yeah, at the very least I can re-clear coat them. I'm not too worried, theres warranties and I take really good care of my car/wheels. I basically wash the paint off my car lol

Why would you want something that everyone else has? It kind of defeat the point of customizing, doesn't it?

I have been running the konig for two summers and love the rims. And 706 total dont sound bad I have over that in my BFG KDW.

But mikeric has a good point. . . I have been thinking about getting rid of them beacuse it seems that everyone has them now. But Rota has some nice ones in 17x7 that I have my eyes on.

Unless the point is getting a cheap, good-looking 15x7" 4x110 wheel, regardless of what "everyone else" has or doesn't have.

I admit I'm not in love with Panasport-style wheels. I'd rather have some Epsilons, but you can't get those new, and used ones are hard to find. So I'll probably just get some Rota RBs when the time comes.

Or if you don't mind running a FWD offset, get some 4x110 to 4x100 adapters and your options are nearly endless.

Since I was going turbo with about 400 horses, I needed to put down as much rubber as I could. In 15" wheels, I could wind some decent widths, but not any decent tires for those widths. I ended up realizing that the best tire selections were in 16" and 17". I ended up going with a staggered 17x8, 17x7 with tires 1" wider on both wheels. Since my rear fenders are slightly rolled, this setup worked fine for me.

I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I think the car looks more aggressive and less "cute" but still maintains its sleeper look. I have race rubber and a couple sets of race wheels, so this setup is simply so I do not kill myself with occassional street use. Although, at the Thunderbolt, it was raining so I ran my street tire setup.

I only have a couple pics as the car is currently working out some turbo issues from BNR.

Im not concerned with what everyone else has because I live in MN. There are NO other FBs around here so I'll be one of the few with these wheels. All I'm looking for is a decent looking, decent set of tires/wheels for my car.

mikeric 12-13-09 10:38 AM

What kind of HP number are you making? What is the car used for? How long do you plan on keeping the wheels? If you have a higher hp application or if you drive in any type of competition, I would recommend stickier/wider tires.

My setup cost me about a grand.

FunK73 12-13-09 02:01 PM

Its just my daily driver, all stock. I don't plan on making any major modifications in the near future and I'll keep the wheels until they die lol

Honestly I would stay away from the Hankooks. I have had a set of them and they do not have the grip needed for the RX7. Right now I went cheap and I have the Falken Azenis on my '85 and I hate them. The best I have used so far is the BFG KDWS with the flame tread. There is no snow where I live so thats not an issue.
The rewinds liik like a pretty good wheel but I went a different way. I have Drag wheels with hub adapters. Not the best setup but I didn't have $2000 to get the wheels I really wanted.
