Glass packs...on a rotary?
As soon as i get sum bread I intend to replace my current exhaust system
|
And i was considering :
2 1/4" exhaust, true dual, back to two glass packs and no muffler. 2 questions I pose, would it be too loud and would the packs last very long? |
WTF ARE YOU THINKING!?!?!
|
glass packs = meltage and crappy life.
2 1/4" pipe is a good idea, but on a stock engine, I would say you want it to collect somewhere, for low end torque, someone with more wisdom correct me if I'm wrong. The further down the line the two pipes collect, the higher in the RPM the torque curve is shifted - this means if you run true duals, you'll have even LESS low end than you had to begin with  why would you wanna do that?! and the loudness issue; it'd be WAY too loud if all you had on there were glasspacks... |
so your saying i should....
|
If you want it to last more then 3-6 months dont get glass packs, get presilencers packed with stainless steel wool..

I'm saying scrap the glasspacks idea, and keep the 2.25" pipe idea, but scrap the true duals idea, unless you have a bridgeport or something...
Get a header, I don't care what make, have the pipes collect right after the header, like most cars have, and run a single pipe to the back with a decent presilencer from your favorite brand name *cough cough* Racing Beat *cough... ahem*, and a good high-flow muffler from your favorite brand *cough... you get the idea...* There's a reason most people just go out and buy the entire Racing Beat exhaust system; it's tried, tested and.... I'm not saying the last word, 'cause then I'd sound like a car commercial. They know a good balance between high end and low end, and they've designed an exhaust that works. |
how much, and where can i get sum?
|
Try http://www.summitracing.com for mufflers/presilencers packed with SS wool.. Or you could buy the ones from Racing Beat.. http://www.racingbeat.com

Keaponlaffen...
In acceleration you want your torque to be higher in the band... the higher the torque the more ft-lbs per minute it is producing making more horsepower. |

QUOTE]I'm saying scrap the glasspacks idea, and keep the 2.25" pipe idea, but scrap the true duals idea, unless you have a bridgeport or something... [/QUOTE] I highly disagree. I had 2 3/4 pipes with a glass pack mounted backwards and a racing beat muffler. Sounded freaking awesome!!!! (not too loud at all) and it made a huge difference in power!![ |
do i really need a prescilencer, and are the stock mufflers really restrictive.
|
The point maybe some miss, is that a rotary exhaust gets MUCH hotter than a standard engine exhaust.
Glasspack = filled with fiberglass. Very hot temperature + fiberglass = melted plastic. Melted plastic + exhaust = STINKS BAD + Ruined exhaust = wasted money. |
Well, actually melted glass; but the the key word is MELTED.
|
I hear Magnaflows sound alright and they are SS and come in all the shapes and sizes you could want.
|
I've seen a RX-7 with glass packs..... the car was in the yard... resting.... go for glass packs I think it'll be okay... just make sure its well vented to cool it quick

I've got glass packs on my dual pipe system that were installed in '91. They still work. Also, my rotary MG Midget has one that still works. They were from a company called Rotary Engineering I think. They're out of business now. They were the only company that made glasspacks for the rotary, and they still work great!

Here's a pic where you can see it hanging down partially.

it looks kinda rusted.... you sure its ok...
|
Are you sure thats a Midget? It looks like a 70-71 MGB. And, is that gold thing to the right of the radio an equalizer? If so, I think our MG's are twins (aside of mine being primer colored now)
|
Glasspacks sound sweeeeet!
I've had them on my FC and now I put one on my FB, and it sounds awsome!!!!! |
Yeah, it's ok. Not bad for being nearly 15 years old, hehe. It's a '77 Midget. The center console was removed in that pic. Also, it's getting a 4 port 13B as soon as I can rebuild one for my REPU (it's getting the REPU's engine which should have more than enough power in this smaller, lighter car).
