Glass or metal sunroof, Which is lighter?
Anybody know which one is lighter? The metal one or the glass one?
I have the metal one, and my rx7 is on a diet. Every once counts! :D |
I have both. Glass is lighter
|
Glass - lighter (no liner or substructure), more headroom, looks nicer.
|
thats strange, i was always told that the metal one is lighter, after the liner is taken off, etc, and you can definately make it lighter than the glass one, because you can take off the second layer/substructure of it, just like you can do to your hood, metal will always be lighter than glass,

Weight
the glass one with the hardware weighs 13.5 pounds. The steel one weighs 13lbs with the headliner and all the hardware attached. We have a winner, steel, lol.

Get Plexiglass!
I have all 3. Plexi weighs about 2/3 what the glass weighs... not quite as pretty, but... |
gosh, im such an idiot! i only drive my rx7 when its nice, so........the lightest of them all is none! i will just take it out when it goes to the scales.

THe glass is heavier, and sunroof cars are less rigid than steelies.

sunroof vehicles with one on opposite sides may alittle less rigidity but are still reinforced because you have structure between the A-pillar and B-pillars and so forth. But convertibles with the exception of the new vettes have far less rigidity on them. mikewoodkazar. the only problem with leaving it off even if it is a nice day is that it has more wind resistance. And in drag racing or top speed it may look good to have that top off but your speed will suffer:D |
Depends on the year.
In My old 81 - it was definately lighter than my glass top. In my 85, the metal top and the glass top are pretty close in weight. |
it shouldnt have that much effect when the roof is off if you have the diffuser that came with the car.. like i do.. you take the roof out and put the little flap in its place .. the wind then goes up over the big hole in your roof.. so no problem anymore.

Glass sunroof definitely feels heavier than metal one with liner
