Gas Tank...

well..the other day..i topped off my gas tank because i haven't fully filled the tank up all the way yet.. i put octane booster into the tank, and fill up the car...well...it takes 26 bucks to fill up the tank (1.83 a gallon) Roughly makes 14.2 gallons...well, i drive the car maybe 100 yards...get out and go into wal-mart...i come outside and take a look at my tank...and its leaking gas...it looked like water at the time, because it was raining, but i put my hand under the "water" and smelled it...and yup...its gas alright...i havent gotten a good look at it yet..but i think where the bolts hold the tank to the car have rusted through...any other opinions ?

If you find out where to get a new tank for a decent price post a link, I need one to :(

I need one too. Mine is full of 15 gallons of rusty varnish. Well, after sitting for 7+ years, what could you expect?

I had an 83 that had rusted out around the rear hatch, water got under the spare tire and rusted through the metal there, and then through the tank. Just like that movie Aliens.
Anyway, I got a tank at a junkyard.

every day I kick myself for throwing away a mint -se tank with my old parts car! Stupid... Stupid..

Check a junkyard, keep an eye on ebay and post a thread in the parts section of the forums. By the way, why did you waste your money on octane booster?

I was just about to ask the same question isn't it better to run low octain?

Nivvinabon 07-25-04 09:43 PM

Yea, but when you do get a better, non-leaking Gas Tank, Wire Brush the thing and make sure there's no Leaks!

If there are just use some fo that Gas Tank Putty that'll work well enough, oh and then Paint it!

I've done this several times allready, finnaly got a non-leaking Tank. Best money I've ever spent!

i had the water under the spare problem...ended up costing me a nice polo (its now very crisby due to my tank and my brothers cigs.) but i just droped the tank and drained/cleaned it out completely then grinded ALL the rust off. patched all the holes (about 12 in all) then painted it with this paint that like thickins up and becomes this kind of plastic...and put it back on.

i havnt been able to test it completely tho (the tank has to be full) and i can afford that right now.
