Gas cap door won't open?

Its been happening lately,.... I go to fill up my '83 GS and I press the rocker switch to pop open the gas cap door and it doesn't open. So I open the rear hatch, try to access the door through the back but not successful. Then, I hit the switch a few more times and finally it pops open. I've done the same thing twice thiese past two weeks.

So whats causing this weird gremlin? Also, is there a manual gas door release like on the FC with a latch? I can't really see behind the trim panel and my car didin't come with an owners manual.

I imagine it's much like the second gen. Open the door and take apart the switch. Clean it and lube it. I have had to do that to both my second gens. On my two first gens only one has that kind of gas cap "door". The other (my SA) uses the key to open.

Its probably just sticking (I've seen it on a couple cars). Has the car ever sat for a long time? I agree with hanman, just take it apart and refurbish it.

You can always reach back behind the trim, inside the sheetmetal, and pull the bar that has the wire attached to it. This is the direct release bar that holds the gas door shut and allows it to open when the solenoid pulls it back. All you're doing is simulating that solenoid, now rebuild the switch.

Torch it open :D .................JK' Do u hear the solenoid poppin'? If so have someone push the switch and U pry it open(gently) and also there is a little piece of metal that act like a (spring) to pop open the lid........Adjust it bending it a little....You will need some patience to get it just right :bigthumb:

I bet it is sticking also. On my 83, I simply give the fuel door a good smack and then try again. It has always worked.

sounds like you need to replace the button you push. the contact points wear out over time. had the same problem with my hatch, switched the switch with a parts car and all is good. i probably have an xtra laying around if you determine you need a new one. pm me.

One my car I push the button and reach back with my right foot and press on the hinge side of the door. Works every time. I must add my paint job isn't ideal.
