gargling on accelleration
 

Been reading through this place for a little while for information (great site and forums, btw) but recently got a problem with my 84 (non SE) that has me stumped.

Carb has been rebuilt, but worked fine for a while afterwards. Done a number of random things to the car, including removing emissions/air pump, timing advanced a bit, but otherwise it's really all origional.

Thing is, whenever you punch on the gas the car bogs a little and gargles loudly. If you timed a 0-60 you could probably get a slightly better time by easing onto the gas then by laying into it (in other words, it's not dogging that much, but it's definately lacking the power it should unleash).

All this I would assume it was related to the accelerator pump somehow, and in fact at idle when you kick it in enough to get the pump to squirt the extra gas (and it puts in plenty) you can hear it start to gargle. I've adjusted the pump every which way but havn't made a difference to the sound/acceleration.

Any idea what could be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently had the same problem with a rebuilt carb...

I ended up replacing a new accelerator pump diaphragm with another new one - which got immediate results. I also replaced the fuel filter, which hadn't been changed since I purchased the car.

Between the two, the car runs great now.

Sounds like accelerator pump. Make sure its good, good squirt when you accuate the linkage and (per Sterling- he rocks by the way, and Carl too-royal carb dudes :worship: ) make sure that the pump arm is vertical with the slot. Should help if not let us know...
