Fuseable link??
I just bought a FB and am not to familiar with this style of RX7 ( I have a FD too). I was wondering since I my buddy of mine said he could install the battery by him self I let him. While I jack the car up. Well he connected the terminals backwords, needless to say he fried the main link. I was wondering if it is OK to run a peice of regular wire and a spade connector or will I have to find on of these things? Also what else could he have fried?
On other ? is that when the car is cold it would start but when the car warms up and the choke closes it dies. Would this be my fuel pump? As long as the choke is open it has no problem running. Well till the battery mishap. Is there any other things I should look for in this car that may give me trouble? Like I said I have a FD and these FB's are way diffrent. Thanks, Chris |
Chris- YIKES! You know- your just going to have to look and see how far back the damage goes... I imagine everything cooked itself? wires burned...lots of smoke...no power to anything?
I have a convertable FB that someone attempted to install a "system" in...and fired the wiring harness... I had the same thought you did...however the problem ran much deeper than one wire. I ended up having to go get a main harness out of a junk yard. The ribbon wires that run under the dash to everything and all around the car melted together...so basically nothing worked on mine. I still have to run a switch for the rear tail lights...and the windshield wipers work when they want too. My first concern would be the ignitors. Those things ARE NOT cheap. They recieve power the instant you turn the key to "on"... My best sugestion would be to visually inspect everything and see what you can see...sometimes you will pop every fuse in the car and not cause allot of damage... when the car is cold it would start but when the car warms up and the choke closes it dies. Its fuel infected right??? |
You should have blown the MAIN fusible link which is black, nothing else should have blown when you switched the lines. Just go to any parts store and pick up some fusible link, stock it's rated at 1.25sq so get equivalent or LESS not more. They sell it in a section, splice on some connectors and your good to go.
check this out too...... https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...t=fusible+link |
I check the the fueses and it only blew one. I check some of the electrical stuff but the only thing that came on was the head lights. I really dont want o replace the whole harness that would really suck I am going to have to keep travis away from the car now.
Would the wire and spade connectors work or will I just be putting my self in more danger. I checked the main wire and it doesn't seems just as hard as the other ones around it. No it is not fuel injected it got a carb. 12a Man and I thought this thing would be easier then my FD. |
ya like i said the main fuseible link should have blown. pull out the center one and it should crumble in the middle. and the wire and spade connector is just fine, i've had mine on for well over a year and it's under the 1.25sq rating. it's equivalent to i think 15A.

Strip the insulation off the fusible link. The wire should be in two pieces. Twist them together.

replace that fusible link box with a 2gen fuse box I did it to my GSLSE I will try to send pics
|
If you have a carbed car, your fuel pump is probably the problem for the cars cutting out after choke retreat... or it was on my car...

I fixed the link today and the electrical system is fine. I did try starting it and it turned over and started then died and now my starter wont turn any more solinoid works though. What a day.
