Fuel tank sending unit
 

Hello....Can anyone out there tell me where the 3 wires terminate for the fuel sending unit on a '85 GS? The top wire on my connector has disintegrated and I can't tell from the diagram where it goes.

There was a diagram on here a while back... I'm gonna try and find it since I'm gonna need this info too. Are you talking about where they plug on the level sender side, or on the other side?

I'm talking about the actual plug on top of the tank. The sending unit wires from the front of the car end at the tank sending unit with a 3 prong pigtail. This pigtail plugs into the sending unit that is attached to the fuel tank. There are 3 wires coming from the front of the car, but my sending unit (attached to the tank) only has 2 prongs left. The uppermost prong has corroded away. I'm wondering where this is supposed to connect (ground, Sender, etc.). You can't really see in there because the clearance is too tight.

Speaking of tank sending units... I'll have to hide behind my newbie flag for asking about this, but...

I finally refilled the entire tank for my RX-7 on my last venture forth from the garage. I noticed the needle only made it up to three-quarters, dispite the pump having shut off automatically.

Would that be a problem with the sending unit, or gauge... or do I have to bust out a Haynes and a voltmeter to figure that one out?

I'm no expert, but my guess is that your fuel level sender (after so many years) just isn't sending as strong a signal as it once did... so yeah, it's probably replacement time, unless you can live with the inaccurate fuel guage.

In my case, the wires had eroded off, and when reattached they didn't give a read at all, so I had to replace it. It was amazingly expensive for one of those, but at least mazdatrix was cheaper than the dealership (the only two places I found to get them).

The "top" one (the one going horizontal if the other two are vertical) is for the black ground wire. In the diagram above the one on the left is for Yellow/Blue and the one on the right is for stright Blue.
