Fuel Tank cleaning
 

Hi, Im cleaning out the fuel tank on my '85 rx7 because it has and other stuff in it from years of not being run. Now I'm not much of a mechanic, so I was wondering if someone could tell me how to remove the tank and all the things I need to disconnect, before I put in the stuff to clean it out.

To drop the tank:

- remove the 3 screws (8mm hex head) inside the fuel filler door
- remove the 2 large bolts holding the straps in place (look under the car near the rear bumper)

The tank will now come down. Have a large cinder block or something to set it on as it comes down. Unplug the connector for the fuel level sender. Remove the three fuel/vent lines on top. That should do it. When you guide the tank down, it is helpful to have someone with you to guide the filler hose through the hole (it can get caught up sometimes).

Once the tank is out, if you remove the top plate or the sender, the screws can be often stuck/rusted. They are small Phillips screws and are easy to strip/break.

When the tank goes back in, it helps to hace a helper to hold the tank while you stretch the straps and get the bolts started. Good luck.

AND-
-make CAREFUL note of WHICH fuel lines go WHERE!!! get digipix. EASY to MIX UP- ask me how I know :(
-easy time to replace all these old hoses - stock size @ any auto parts store
-new fuel filter after re-install
-make sure tank is as drained as you can - gets very hard to handle if heavy fuel load sloshing around as you lower it!!
-you'll need a new GASKET for the sender
-take it to a good rad shop- they will chem-dunk it and clean it for you about $70 well worth
-use a sealer product like POR15's Tank Seal Kit to seal the insides from rusting/shedding into fuel in the future (por15.com)

The radiator hop where I have tanks dipped also sells quarts of tank sealer for 20 bucks.
