Fuel Pump Switch
 

Alright guys, How is everyone! I was reading on the Carter Fuel Pump/Holly Fuel Pressure Regulator thread ( https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/fuel-how-install-carter-fuel-pump-holley-fpr-529605/ ) and ordered the parts. Well, I test fitted the pump to the bracket, and found out the hard way that the nuts they give are self stripping... no fun. After removing the nuts nad ruining the threads, I finally got it mounted with locking nuts (found at lowes, its a thin piece of metal and a hole in the middle, holding/locking it in) and read about the rewiring situation. Couldnt find a way to pass a 10g wire through the firewall without drilling and rubber gromit it. HECK no I was not going to do that, so I searched for another way. As usual, I got confused. Got the parts, and still confused. so therefor I am making another way to get power to the pump.

I ran a 10g wire from the positive hook-up on the pump, through the rubber gromit that the original FP wires ran through in teh storage bin area (mine has no storage bins). I drilled a hole through the screw hole of the storage plate. I did not widen the screw hole, but there was a support beam under it, so that needed a hole. Drilled away, cant even see it. Ran the wire through it, and screwed the plated back down.

Now, I have a switch and a mount to put it on. Spray painted it black.

I wanted it hidden, so if someone decides to take my car, they only get as far as the fuel in the bowls let them. Finding a place wasnt hard at all. Hint: I dont smoke.

So into the ash tray it goes. I had to cut a piece out so the bottom Power and Ground clasps have a place to go. Also had to grind away a little bit of the metal bracket that holds it down to the tranny tunnel. That was spray painted black, along with the arm rest/center console storage bin. It was quite nasty/rusty in there and I wanted it all matching.

And away it goes into the car! This is just a mock-up, I havent bolted it down. Also the paint was dry to the touch, but still a little wet, hence you can see some finger marks. Again, pictures are of it opened and closed.

Now I am going to hook up the power supply to a steady source, which I chose to be the cigarette lighter. Somewhere I am going to splice my way in there.


So what do you guys think? I know its a cheap spray paint job, but believe me, it looks better this way than before. Any suggestions/questions/comments welcome.

A good solution and a really cool idea and execution. :)
Some cars use the same circuit as the tail lights for power. Yours is at least more accessible of a power supply under the dash rather than behind the rear speaker surrounds. :icon_tup:

Thanks man! I am more worried about the power. I replaced the original wire with 10g, but that is up to the cig lighter. from then on, it is stock wiring again... Hopefully it works and doesnt fluctuate.

This is true. Hmm... maybe run it to something off of the fuse box? The lighter may vary in current. I'm looking at the wiring diagrams right now for the lighter. Lemme see what I can come up with.

The cigarette lighter is on the same circuit as the ignition switch, power mirrors, gas door release, and some other things. All pull power and can pull more when in use. I think that may pose a problem with current.

alrighty. I dont want to have to take out the dash and whatnot, cause then I might as well put carpet in (i hate how one thing leads to another then to another and another), so the less the better. I will look at the stereo surround tomorrow and see if i can loosen a side up enough to run the power wire through, and find a hole to get past the firewall.

haha. Yea when you are working on one problem you see another. I have been fighting that battle all week.

Now just find something solid that you can power into. Also you don't have to pull the dash to get to things back there. Carbed 12a? If so you can remove the left side panels where the choke knob and mirror switch is. That will give you access to bundles and bundles of electrical doodads.

Yeah, I had the 2 screws out, then found out the dead pedal has bolts behind that. as soon as I get that off, the better. I dont want to hook this up to any stock wiring at all, as i see stock = restrictive.

Oh and I know I will be needing a fuse to go along with this set-up. I plan on running one between the switch and battery. any objections? 30A fuse.

Wiring into something in the engine bay would be better than under the dash. Another thing, instead of drilling you could run the wire through the speedo cable hole. There is a rubber gromit there. :)

Follow the diagram in the relay thread and run a relay.

As stated, I got confused :p

And i know it is probably the EASIEST thing i would ever do on the car, but i am not electrically inclined. But doing it this way is the same plus I have the added "cool factor" of a glowing red switch haha

Use the switch and all but use a relay in between. Much safer and looks cool if mounted a certain way. Looks way hi-tech.

I removed the rear wiper motor from mine, since I never use it. Then I hooked up the switch to my fuel pump. A car thief is not likely to think of that, and I didn't have to hide it. In the past I have put a switch under the edge of the center console, so it is out of sight, but easily reached. On fuel injected cars, this serves double duty as a security system and prevents flooding - just use the switch to shut off the engine and it will not flood on startup.

I ran my wire in through the grommet for the choke cable...

Today I ran my wire through the speedo cable grommet.

Well, I ended up running the wire through the rubber gromit that the mass wires run through. TIP: cut a piece of coat hanger and curl a tiny end of it around the 10g wire and clamp it down. that way you have something hard to hold on to (like a needle and thread) and it will make a hole through the gromit if you cant get it through/around the wires, like i did.

Please run a relay! Did you use a rubber bushing to protect the wire you put in the storage bin?
