fuel pump problem or something else?
 

well, i put the car away last winter, a couple weeks later i drove it, then it died and wouldn't start after that. spring time, finally can work on the car, cleaned spark plugs, make sure full MSD ignition is hooked up, checked fuel filters to see if fuel was flowing from pump and it wasn't, added gas directly to carb and it fired and died. i know everything is working except im not getting fuel to the carb, i replaced the pump with a new mallory the same one i previously had and after i hooked it up it popped a fuse. after i replaced the fuse it wouldnt work so i thought maybe the wires got switched around and swapped them and it turned on but didn't sound right. i put the wires back to the correct setup and the pump still didn't work correctly. the pump ended up over heating i guess becuase it just shut off even though the key was on. not really sure what is going on, the fuel pump is brand new, but it doesn't seem to be working right. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

which pump are you using, do you have 12V+ at the pump, I had issues with mallory pumps not lasting a full canadian summer, they keep overheating and not moving any fuel pressure or volume, I even had 2 replaced on warranty with the 3rd being exactly the same. I ended up switching to a carter, less than 1/2 the price of 1 mallory and its already lasted as long as 2 of them in my breif experience, down side is a bit more noise but you know it working!

Whatever else you do, change the fuel filter religiously once a year. I do it when I take mine out of storage in the spring. Cheapest $3 you can spend on the car ;)
As to the pump, you never said if you switched on the ignition then got out of the car and actually _heard_ the pump working. Should be able to hear it even from inside the car with ignition ON, and car not running...
And don't those pumps need fuel thru them to keep cool? Would it be over heating because fuel isn't getting TO the pump??
And how much gas was in the car when this happened? If the tank outlets are plugging up , they tend to do it most when the tank is LOW (don't ask me how I found this out...). This is when whatever crud is drifting around in the tank settles and is more easily drawn into the outlet. If the car runs or runs better with a full tank, then you may need to drain, remove, clean, re-seal the tank. Not unusual on 25 yr old cars, esp if they sit a long time incorrectly stored (ie, partially filled tanks, no fuel preservative like Stabil added).

I've had a new Mallory pump do exactly the same thing. Apparently quality control is poor. I would take it back.

well thanks for all the help, i decided to go back to the carter fuel pump so it will be here in a day or two. tired of dealing with the mallory, the first one overheated last summer a couple of times and now this brand new one doesn't work correctly, so back to louder but more reliable carter

"Overheating electrical device" and "fuel" shouldn't have anything to do with each other. If QC on the motor is poor, why would QC on the sealing be any better?
