fuel problem

I am having a starvation problem under engine loads. I am getting 20 psi at idle and when I rev it, the press fall to 15 psi. I replaced the fuel pump and filter today. I also wired the pump to the ignition switch so that it is powered with the ignition on. It ran good when I took it for a drive. After I shut it off and went to start it a few minutes later, The pump went dead. It is getting power but no output. I have been working on this problem for a few weeks now but I keep running into the same probems. I had my fuel tank refurbished and the lines cleaned. I am on the third fuel pump and second filter. The injectors have been professionally cleaned and the regulator replaced. I thought it might be an electrical problem then a blockage problem but now I am totally lost. There is no kinks in the hosed and I even removed the sock filter in the tank but still no help. Please help.

CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER.

Check the wires. My car would run, then stop, then run, then stop. It was the fuel pump wires, so I ran new ones.

It is very possible to burn up the fuel pump by running it without the engine running. You could be repeating this process because you have your pump wired to your ignition. I run a Holley fuel pump with a Holley oil pressure switch. Without oil pressure the pump won't run. That's all I can offer, im carbed.

I'm guessing you've got an -SE, if so 20 lbs of fuel presure is too low, i believe it's 28. something lbs. don't mess with the way you've wired the fuel pump, you want it the way the car came. when you spin up the engine does it 'miss' a little bit ?

se fuel pressure is 49.8 - 71.1 according to the FSM for an 85 SE

fuel pump

The last thing I did was replacing the pump and wiring it to run with the ignition ON. It is running as I writing this. I am getting 29 psi at idle and climbing as it revs. The factory manual states that it should be about 28 psi at idle. I odn't know what is causing the pumps to burn up but only time will tell with this new one.
