Fuel mileage reports:
 

Here are some of my tracked MPG reports from the rotaryfest trip.
Out of the 3 cars checked on the run which consisted of speeds which we will deny. Meaning that they were at warp speed.
Best was Kory_yahi driving a 85 GSL-Se with minor mods. Has racing beat header and presilencer and cold air intake. The only other thing that helped was the fact the diff being used is from a GSL being a 3:90 instead of the 4:10. And the injectors had just been cleaned.
He averaged 22MPG aT WARP SPEEDS.

Next was coyboyfun with his 83 GSL with a 84 12a street port motor, 45OER carb setup and
streetport exhaust system. What is amazing about his is that i just put a complete GSL-Se suspension with the 4:10 gears and a modified Se trans with a lower 1st and 2nd gear. Added was a lightned steel flywheel. He is running 16 inch tires.
He averaged 18 MPG at warp speeds. And has gotten 22MPG plus with his foot out of it. The worse he has gotten was 17.5 in stop and go playing around.

Last was my bone stock 82GS 12a with a automatic with no overdrive.
I got 17 on the warp speed runs where my tach was consistnetly at 5-6.9k most of the time.
I don't have any figures at regular speeds because the car does not get driven that much.
But with that automatic with no overdrive i would say that i would get tops 20mpg on the highway versus a 5 speed or overdrive which would get between 24-25MPg on the highway.

As far as the lost crew with there street port weber setups and stock motor with weber setups i did not ask them. But i believe that they were down at the 13-15 range.

best i've ever gotten was about 24, cruising at 80. 12a, holley 465, holley blue pump, -6 lines, e-fan, RB long tube header, RB duals, MSD coils, Magnacore 10mm wires, no emissions, only seats and a dashboard inside.

worst i've gotten was 5, back road driving one night while *pissed*

I spent approx $250 on gas alone as we drove with both windows roll-down, full load of tools, a passenger (my son who was asleep 90% of the time) and the 4.44 gears which is useless on top end. Few pix from that run including our average speed. AND OF COURSE, DONT TRY THIS KIDS: THIS IS ONLY FOR THE LOOSE NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL :)

I routinely get 25mpg on the freeway between Portland and Seattle in my '85 GSL-SE, but the average speed is only 75 mph. I noticed long ago that at speeds over about 85 mph, the ECU goes open loop and kills mileage.

My peripheral port 13B race car pulling a "half" RX-7 trailer got an average of 14 mpg between Portland, OR and Gainsville, FL. On the return trip, during bad weather, my support driver towed the trailer behind his van between New Orleans, LA and Fort Worth, TX and we BOTH got better milage...mine was 19 mpg, which is frighteningly good for a peripheral port with a Weber 51 IDA.

But the best mileage I ever got with a rotary engine was 30+ mpg in a bone stock 12A.

Are you running stock 4.10? Im thinking of going back to 4.10 for better top end ssince my FB is now my cruiser.

I think you should throw in a set of 3:90 instead. Your street port has enough power and gas mileage will be lots better. :)

My GSL-SE is running the stock rear end ratio (~4.1 ). The PP13B had a 4.88 R&P. I love 4.88 gears but it does require a lot of shifting and you lose 5th as an economical cruising gear.

I was gonna have Tranquil take video of us hauling ass down I-71 on Saturday, but, well, the video camera was in a hardshell suitcase in the back and I didn't feel like stopping.

Suffice to say, the needle was pointing a *bit* further to the passenger side. :D

27+mpg on the return trip and rarely slowed below 80mph.

*evil laughter*

I love the 4.78's. I find that I shift less, because starting off in 2nd is just that much easier and it makes driving around town almost automatic-quick because there's so much less shifting.

I have an FC trans in there now, and the FC supertall 5th conspires to bring my cruise RPM down to stock-FB levels, but 4th is waaay far away so casual downshifting is impossible. When this trans breaks I'm putting an FB unit back in.

I see nothing wrong with buzzing 4-5k down the highway. Doesn't hurt fuel economy any, and I rarely would have to downshift (with the FB trans). And if I did, 4th was *right there*.

Diff'r'nt strokes, and all that.

How much for the 4.44 chunk assembly?

it has been a long-time since we last postwhored. I got my 4.44 are from kia sportage and the b2600 4x4 front diffy. $25 for ring and pinion from local junkyard plus bruised knuckles and cuts. So far, I found one KIA with a 4.78 like PJ but thats it. All others are 4.44 which gave the conclusion that the 4.78 is NOT from an original CALI car.

thats next in my list...GTU tranny in my RX-3.
