It looks like that thing that causes you to die in a fire. The pulsation dampener. There is a page on the mazdatrix website. Checking...

Pulsation dampner. Very common failure and main cause of engine bay fires, must be fixed asap and do not drive the car or run the engine. You have 2 choices, buy a new one for around 125 or spend a few bucks an replace it with a banjo bolt.

Earls part # 997591, banjo bolt 12X1.25 mm. Should be able to order one fom Summit, Jegs, Aerospeed, etc. Replacing it with a banjo bolt will not harm performance. I replaced the PD in my 2nd gen simply as a preventative safety measure.

Welcome to the forum. In my sig line are links to the online FSMs and other rotqry related reading. Download whatever you need and enjoy.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. What is the job of the Pulsation dampner, and what safety risks do i run without having one?

trochoid 01-25-08 01:51 AM

The PD evens out the fuel pressure spikes from the injectors cycling on/off. There are no safety risks replacing the PD with the banjo bolt.

Damn that PD...mine also leaked lately but is now fixed.

nothing like having an extremly flammable liquid dribbling all over your hot exhaust. can anyone say weiny roast:anger:

Just replaced mine with a banjo bolt... It is not necessary to remove the dynamic chamber to change that part but make sure the crush washer are well align when you tighten the bolt. I badly cruched one and gas pissed even more than before. Had to machine a new washer myself as it is a hard size to find. Since you are in Canada like me, i recommend NOT buying from summit. They have a internationnal handling fee PLUS the shipping. My 20$ banjo bolt + gas line attachement ended up costing 50$. Read the small print as I tought the handling fee was shipping.

does this problem also cause smoke to come out of the exhaust...more than usual?

Sgt.Stinkfist 07-03-09 09:39 PM

the pulsation damper is also there to take the load off of the rubber fuel hoses. running just a banjo bolt will put the hoses under more stress, so it is ideal to either replace the rubber hoses w/ new ones, or w/ stainless braided ones

No. The danger lies is the raw fuel that leaks from the PD onto hot engine parts, starting fires.

Fuel Pulsation dampener. It's a little metal pod on the end of your fuel rail with a piece of sheet metal in it It should have a see through (faded yellow) rubber boot over it.. When the injector shuts closed, the pressure spike is negated by hitting the tiny sheet metal that springs back into place, it keeps your fuel rail from rupturing. There is a screw on it that tends to back itself out and it leaks right above the hot headers and is a huge culprit for nearly all Rx-7 engine fires.

Here is yours:

The banjo bolt is a cheap fix, and it won't be as good for your fuel system, but if you keep good maintenance up on the hoses(replace often) as well as the clamps.

Wow my post is back from the dead! lol

It was fading into obscurity again so I figured i'd help. Do you just use the washers that come with the bolt or do I need to find some new copper crush washers for the bolt?

Don't forget, he's got a second fuel pulsation damper on his fuel pump (as do all the rest of the GSL-SE's), as well. I wouldn't worry about any problems regarding the fuel lines, as I've never heard of that happening because of a banjo bolt update. You're already ahead of the curve in that you smelled the failing PD. Plenty of FCs burn to the ground by kids who don't notice or care when theirs fails.
