front covers.... 89 13b swap

Hey I'm debating which front cover I want to use for the swap here. (I'm putting an 89 N/A 13b into my 12a 85 GS)

I got the mazdatrix mounting adapter in the mail yesterday. Now from what I heard I have to use the 12a front cover for the engine to mount correctly. How ever the 13b front cover bolts up perfectly to the mounting adapter.

I dont know exactly how the mountings are layed out and how they work, (i havent pulled the 12a yet) but why couldnt I use the 13b front cover?

huh?????

the only explanation i have to offer is that maybe someone changed the front cover on that motor before you. the '89 engine's front cover should not have bolts there ... it mounts from the center intermediate housing.

do you have any pictures of it?

BTW ... it is not absolutely necessary to use the 12A front cover, the 84-85 13B front would be your IDEAL choice ... the 12A is just cheaper since you already have it in your possession - that's all.

actually I do.... the front cover looks exactly like the one on this pic, .... it has bolt holes in front!

diabolical1 11-17-02 06:15 PM

then, i believe someone switched it before you got it. that's what the SE front cover would look like.

well heres an actual pic of it that I just took, ... look! it has the second gen oil cooler fittings! what kind of cover is it?

nimrodTT 11-17-02 06:47 PM

Looks exactly like a 12A front cover with a 12A oil fitting to me...

hornbm 11-17-02 06:55 PM

hmmmm but I have an oil line that connects from the front cover to the second gen oil cooler that I have....

nimrodTT 11-17-02 06:57 PM

I'm pretty sure they use the same size fittings.

hornbm 11-17-02 07:01 PM

hmmmm not so sure....

that says i need somthing different but I'm beginning to think that i'm thinking about somehting backwards here... i'll snap some pics of all the stuff tomorrow.

My 12A front cover on my S5 TII engine looks like that including the oil fitting. Except mine has the turbo oil return added.

Now stop worrying about it and go install the engine! :D

In regards to the oil cooler, just use a S1 or S2 RX7 cooler. It's probably easier and then you know it'll have suitable fittings.

hornbm 11-17-02 07:10 PM

just wondering.... anyway I have all of the parts any way including the second gen oil cooler, so why not use it?

I wish I could be working on it right now but its at my high school autoshop and I have to wait till tomorrow.
Monday... fun fun fun

Ok, I'm gonna be doing this swap someday in my GS, what advantage would there be in useing a SE front cover over the 12a's cover? is there any?

The only differance is the mounting for the oil metering pump.

hornbm 11-17-02 08:49 PM

well what exactly do I have to modify on the 12a front cover for the oil metering pump? just drill a hole or somthing?

rx7passion 11-17-02 08:56 PM

well the 12a front cover uses a 2 hose oil metering pump and the later 13b uses a 4 hoes oil mettering setup, the bolt patterns are different so you cant pump a 12a pump on a 13b cover etc etc.. as long as you are oging to pre mix i wouldnt worry about ti at all.:)
