Franken Rotor is it possible?
 

I have 4 12a's with blown REAR apex seals. Is it possible to become Dr. Fankenstien and combine two bad motors to make one good one? without purchasing a rebuild kit? let me know i have a castle in transylvania with a large garage and a lighting rod ready for the experiment! "it's alive, it's alive" anyways if it's possible let me know..


oh yeah by the way, went to the local Mazda dealer the other day. Asking if i could purchase 1 apex seal. He told me they don't have "apex" seals because that is a brand not the name of the seal....what a friggen moron. I just walked out and rolled up the windows in my car for a minute and screamed my head off!

oh yeah again.....a niegbor of mine just picked up a sweet 91 gtuS i walked over to talk to him about it.... which he then claimed it has a "factory V6".....oh my... i could have strangled him. He popped the hood so i could see the "v6" (very clean 13b). So I walked back home shut the bathroom door and sat on the toilet and screamed my head off again..... what a waste.

Yes, i'm doing basically the same thing with my motor. You won't be able to reuse the water seals and you're going to need intake gaskets atleast.

on 12a motors you MUST use a front and a rear rotor..... no way around it .

ok so I can do it i just can't mix up the rotors or try to use 2 front rotors in the same block...k. IGOR will be very pleased.. I think i may just check the specs on the seals and just transfer the one bad seal instead of the whole rotor. Great. I've got a winter project now.

oh yeah if anyone needs a good running 13b from a second gen I really need to get rid of one.

maybe i wasnt clear ...on the 12a rotors there is a letter cast into them.... either a F for front or a R for rear.... you cannot swap these around, or use 2 f or 2 r .... the combustion dish wont be facing in the right direction

You can use the apex seals from the good front ones in the rear rotors. There are seals that have to be replaced during a rebuild and there's just no way around that. Buy your softseals and start having fun :D

one of the rear rotors should still be in okay shape

get a gasket kit and go at it

btw it would be a good time to get a street port

after you get the 4 correct rotor housings and rotors, and about 15k for a Eshaft, you ought to be only about another 10k to getting rest of the parts fabbed, and then maybe another 20k to get something to run the induction, ignition and maybe some sort of a computer, so yeah in theory for about 100k

ooops maybe I read that wrong, you want a 12a not a 4 rotor... man the things you see at 2 30 am :) LOL

Good question. I don't know myself...but I would guess the reason no to is that either there's a size difference between front and rear and/or it has to do with the balancing of the engine.

Does anyone know for sure. I now have two good fronts and would like to make one engine out of them

if you use 2 front rotors the motor will be out of balance, and the dish in the rotor will be pointing in the wrong direction

How out of balance will it be? Would it shake its self appart very quickly?
What will the dish in the wrong direction do? No power? low power?

On both of my engines the rears eat the seals so there is not a good R rotor to be used.

I was going to but I have so many 12a parts and carbs lying abound i wanted to stick with those. The 13b's fi is shot and so i'd need all new manifolds and a carb ....

you can't mix the rotors because one has an F and the other has an R. thats why. lol

Do you have to use the correct seals or would some high temp sealer work in the water groves?

You cant use 2 F rotors.......because 2 F reminds me of 2F2F.......which is just bad. Very, very bad.

At least I could then use the car for jumps.

Hmm. I don't get it.. If you are tearing down the motor anyways why not spend the money and buy all new seals..?! IMO i'd rather spend 500 - 600 now and do it right than have to tear the engine down again in a year.... because if you have an engine that's lost one seal I could guarantee the rest of them are not too far behind it.
