Flywheel Test: What Years Are These From?
 

Ok guys. Having a little ebay trouble here. I may be at fault but I'm not sure. To make a long story short I have two flywheels that I listed on e-bay. One of them was on my 83 parts car. The other came off of an 85 engine. The "83" flywheel sold on a buy it now for $15. I shipped it to the guy and he got it yesterday. Except now he says that it is a 74-80 flywheel, not 83 like I listed, and it weighs 30 pounds. He says the real 83 flywheels weigh 23 pounds, and that is what he thought he was buying. So my question is, what year of engine is this flywheel from? Is it really an 83 flywheel like I thought? Or is this guy right that it goes on a 74-80 12A? All I know is that it was bolted to the back of the 83 engine I pulled out. That doesn't mean anything though...

Here is the email he sent me.... Is he right? I think he is trying to get me to let him keep the flywheel, and return his money also. I don't wanna rip the guy off if I listed it incorrectly, but I wonder if he is trying to play me....

"I bought the 12a flywheel that you shipped out recently at the buy-it-now price. I was looking for a lighter weight flywheel for my racer but the rules say it has to be a stock unit.

The flywheel you sent weighs 30 pounds. That would make it from a 74 through 80 12a engine, according to the racing beat technical manual. I already have a 30 pound flywheel.

The 1983 flywheel (actually 81 through 85) is 23 pounds and has significantly lower inertia. That is what I need and that is what I was buying based on your description.

Its not from a 83. read the markings in the back or weigh it. the pre-81 weighs about 28 lbs -30 whereas the 81-82 are 23 lbs.

please look in back of the flywheel for numbers. Then go to mazdatrix website. mazdatrix has a FAQ on flywheels. As I said, If its 215 and weighs about 30 lbs, then its from an earlier motor which could be a 12-A or 13-B 4port.

I can't check the back because I don't have the flwheel anymore. I already shipped it to the buyer. :( So no luck there...

I'm still open to suggestions guys. :D Not that I dont' trust wackyracer though. He is a knowledgeable guy. I just wanna be darn sure that I was at fault before I refund the guys money. I am willing to accept my own mistakes though. I know I would be ticked off if I were in his shoes.....

maybe that will help. an 83 shoulda been 26 lbs so whatever not a big difference. IF madatrix's info is accurate then that flywheel you posted is be 83, due to step design where clutch bolts. Hope this helps.

You said it came out of an '83 parts car. It obviously works for the years you said. You did NOT represent that it was lighter weight or anything of that nature. You even said you aren't a flywheel expert. I think he got what he paid for.

BTW: If you get any truly lightweight steel or aluminum flywheels for any SA or FB years in good shape, I'll buy all you got for 18 plus shipping.

I think the moron I bought it from took the flywheel off of a 79 and put it on the 83 engine. Don't ask me why. I'm not even sure this would work. The fronts of the flywheels look the same, but they are different. The guy thought he was getting a true 83 flywheel that weighs 23 lbs. The one on the engine was a 79-80 flywheel, that weighs 30 lbs. I don't know if they are interchangeable or not. I am going to take the heat for this one because I should have correctly listed my item. There was no way for the buyer to tell from my listing, since the flywheels look identical from the front. I believe I am at fault for this...

yea you should've listed it right but on the other hand from the pic you showed us earlier you can tell it's not an 83. oh well its your call man.

you should send him an e-mail. Better now than later. Also, those guys are usually looking for the 81-82 flywheels which only weigh 21 lbs (actually 23 when I put my spare in a regular bathroom scale).

I Need to see a side view to bee sure of what year...

I refunded him the cost of the flywheel and just let him keep it. He ate the shipping costs though. It worked out okay. My fault for not doing my homework on the item...
