flywheel nut.

Ok, I admit I'm being lazy, since I could find the answer in the FSM. What size socket do I need to take off the big flywheel nut?

installer67 03-10-10 09:51 PM

Your right your lazy! A search for "flywheel nut" would get you what you want too.

mazdaverx713b 03-10-10 10:50 PM

2 1/8 or a 52mm. it will require a 3/4" drive breaker bar or impact gun and a flywheel stop.

Siraniko 03-10-10 11:48 PM

cold chisel and a hammer!!! screw the socket

BlackWorksInc 03-10-10 11:52 PM

Ah yes... the wumbo nut of doom.

gsl-se addict 03-11-10 07:49 AM

Dave: You mean 54mm. :)

Thanks guys. If I can get the nut off with ease, is it ok to re-use it? I know that it's recommended to replace it.

yup just a typo. thanks for the good catch :)

at any rate, just go to sears and grab a 2 1/8 socket and you'll be set...provided you have the flywheel stop and a large breaker bar and a friend to help you hold the engine...or a 3/4 drive impact gun

i have reused mine with no issues what so ever. just be sure to torque it properly.

Sgt Fox 03-11-10 07:12 PM

Never had any issue with reuse.

Thanks. Does it have to be torqued according to specs with a torque wrench or just reallllllllll tight?

mazdaverx713b 03-11-10 07:27 PM

torque wrench specs are preferred...but since it should be torqued to 289-362 ft/lbs, you may not have a suitable torque wrench..german torque spec: goodentight...seems to be effective, lol

KansasCityREPU 03-11-10 07:56 PM

If your taking the engine completely apart, remove the bolt in the center of the eccentric shaft on the front the engine first.

Jerk?!!

PM- 3/11-quote *****Yeah I'm lazy.

Dude,

You don't have to be a jerk about it. Notice that everyone else responded nicely. If you don't have an answer for someone, then don't post. Guys like you should stay off the forum.***** -end quote:asshole:

Are you f**king kidding me! I have made a point not to be a dick here on the forums, even when I think I'd be right. I simply agreed with you. in youe own words you said you were lazy! I was actually flipping you shit for not even bothering to look. A search or even a small effort to read the FAQ's would have given you what you wanted without asking for help. In case you didn't bother to read the forum rules or guidelines. FAQ stands for FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS and was compiled at the expense of others time for our benefit. Specifically to answer all the common questions so that those here can use the time they donate to helping others by actually helping with "real" issues! Not so that some ass too lazy to even use a search button or read the FAQ's, who self admittedly hasn't even looked for his own answer can waste the members time. Not to mention going out of your way to PISS ME OFF! I was jekin your chain asshole. But it WAS and IS true as well. Sorry if it hurt or if telling the truth pisses you off, but for someone to lazy to do a search, you sure made time to pm me and call me a jerk. Guess your laziness is selective huh!? As to staying off the forum, maybe you should actually learn the meaning of the word, before you use it. We aren't here to serve you! In short as my first official "jerk" post, KISS MY A** DUDE!!!

My apologies to everyone else, but I gotta call bullshit when it's thrown in my face.

Siraniko 03-11-10 09:15 PM

there is so much love on this forum lately LOLLL

mustanghammer 03-11-10 11:31 PM

When you get the nut loose the next task is to get the flywheel to come off of the E-shaft. This is a tapper fit so it won't just come loose. The best way I have found to hit the flywheel out on the edge with a brass or lead hammer. I have a big brass hammer - this works everytime for me....even on light weight steel flywheels:nod:

Mazdatrix has a great description of this process on their website.

BlackWorksInc 03-12-10 01:02 AM

Hmmm I used a Harmonic balancer pulled to get it off...

rotornoob 03-12-10 03:38 AM

i used a 54 mm impact on the nut and then inserted a pry bar on one side of the flywheel and tapped the other with a brass hammer. came right off. i also reused the nut with no problems.

rxtasy3 03-12-10 08:04 AM

when removing the flywheel, leave the nut threaded on some to keep the flywheel from jumping off and hitting the floor, or worse, ur toes.

Sgt Fox 03-12-10 11:31 AM

Loosen nut, then whack flywheel sides with a hammer. Pops right off.

mikeric 03-12-10 11:50 AM

D's Nutz

If you dont want to reuse the nut or you damage it too much in the removal process, forum vender Rotary-Works sells a titanium one. No real extra value except that it is cool.

blwfly 03-12-10 12:27 PM

if u use a impact gun heres a tip.
i used 1/2"hose about 6ft long for ultimate air volume.. i had a 15ft 1/4" hose before and it wasnt enough was fustrating all day till i got smarter lol
