Flywheel/motor swap

Owned an 80 RX til it got too rusty.Found a cherry 84 with a blown motor.Did the swap cuz the motor was new in the 80.it had a nice light steel flywheel. Now my oldest got her liscence and the rx was the car of choice until it started to burn ablue streak. Mazda says anew 80 motor is 3 months away .I have all the 84 parts to do the swap but am wondering about the fly wheel.Iknow 83/84 cars have a larger clutch and different flywheel.I'm curiuos if I can use the 80 lightwieght fly wheel with an 80 clutch on an 83/84 motor??Thanks for your help!!!!

Ok, so you have an 84 with an 80 engine in it, and you want to get another 80 engine, and put back in the 84? Or are you going to put an 84 engine in the 84, and you want to use the 80 lightweight flywheel? I think you need to clear it up a little more...

huh????

It would still work, but if I were you, I'd rather go with the FB's 225mm clutch size, I mean if you're going to be ripping it all out anyway. Unless however, that '80 flywheel/clutch setup has low miles on it.

Sorry guys

I'VE got an 84 short block on order.I want to put the light hi-perf set up from my 80 motor on to the new 84 block. Thanks for your patience.Alittle less/more confused each day.BT

Ok, so youre asking if the 80's flywheel and clutch will fit on the 84 engine youre ordering...Gotcha. Well, now that I know what youre asking, unfortunalty I dont know the answer, but at least someone that might know the answer knows the question now :).

PS - I assume youre using the 84s tranny also? I dont know if that matters, but it might :)

you can use the clutch and flywheel but you WILL need to change the counter balance. the rotors of the 80 are a different weight so you will need to get the appropriate counter weight so the motor doesnt shake itself apart. I have an 81 motor with an 84 flywheel and counterbalance.

I thought that the performance flywheel used the larger (later model) clutch already. I just put a flywheel off of an '83 onto a '79 and experienced no balance problems.

The answer should be yes, you can make the swap... good luck!

EDIT: Just saw DAMON's post, sorry about giving false info, didn't know there was a difference in counterbalance...
