Flywheel Fitment

I am just wondering, are rotary flywheels interchangeable?

mazdaverx713b 04-01-10 09:23 PM

yes and no.. it depends on the internals (year and weight of the rotors). the flywheel is very specific to the internals to keep the engine's balance. the 79-82 flywheels are identical and weighted accordingly for that year and the 84-85 are weighted accordingly. using an 81 flywheel on an 85 engien will destroy the rotor bearings not to mention the stationary gear bearings and vice versa.

Well I have a 12A Turbo, what kind of flywheel should I put on the thing... It has a flexplate on it currently.

Without knowing what year the engine is for sure, get an automatic counter weight for the year of car the engine came from and an aftermarket lightweight flywheel.

buy an after market light flywheel!

12a Turbo SHOULD be like an 83-85 US engine.

Yes, and no.. The 12AT has much lighter rotors than the NA version, so just using a flywheel from one of these, will not work very well..

Since it has a flexplate, i am assuming it has a counterweight bolted to it? If so, buy an aftermarket flywheel for pre 85 rotary, and bolt it up!

get the flywheel for ur yr model engine.

I would believe the 12A turbo had an '83-'85 assembly, as j9fd3s says, but the only difference is the compression depressions in the rotor faces being a little deeper to reduce compression a bit. The '83-'85 assembly is a little lighter than the '82 and older assemblies.

I forgot to mention I have a TII tranny I am going to be hooking this up to.

I was reading up and people are saying to use the automatic rear counter weight with a TII flywheel, Turbo clutch, and turbo starter. This is all correct?

the t2/FD/rx8 uses a larger diameter flywheel, so the flywheel, clutch and starter are different.

if you have a 12A turbo engine, there is no stock flywheel that works with those rotors and a turbo transmission.

you need an aftermarket flywheel
