Fluid Leak, and Smoke Problems.
 

Hey guys, I have a few problems with my '84 GLS-SE. It hasn't run since I have owned it, until today. We flushed out the fuel system, changed spark plugs, thermostat, distributor cap, and a couple of other things. We put some fresh gas into it, and tried her.

She started up after a few tries, and then we realized that there was a huge amount of smoke pouring out the back, and a black liquid (oil maybe?) spewing out of the exhaust (see pictures).

My dad, as much as I love him, decided it would be a great idea to take it down the interstate to the gas station. The car was still smoking like crazy, but we made it. Once we got in the gas station, it died. On interstate, the thermometer was almost maxed out, my dad thought it didn't open, but it cooled down a little. In the gas station we tried to start her up again, and smoke was flooding out of the front exhaust. We had to haul her back home on a trailer.

If anyone has any ideas about this that would be great. We think it might be the water pump, or the seals.

Well, reading your description, it would seem that the car is likely seeping oil/coolant past the housings, into the intake path (suction), and out the exhaust.

That ain't good.

Most rotary engines that don't get used for extended periods of time end up with corrosion in the rotor chambers and water channels in the housings, which can lead to corroding straight through, esp. if there isn't any antifreeze in the mix.

Overall, I think you're going to need an engine rebuild, and soon.

Ouch. Yeah that looks pretty bad. You don't want to let it overheat btw. rotors will distort and crumple also distroying the housing. That looks like its mostly coolent and alot of carbon. it has a greenish tint. dosn't look like coolent and oil, that turns white. chances are the motors junk. Its been sitting with fluids leaking into the rotorhousing and corroding the internals. But mabey just mabey the PO put atf in the engine or somthing to store it. and your just going to half to let that burn off. But you said it smells like coolent. whats the consistancy of the liquid? Theres another thread that was just started, it has an idea for a cheap fix that seems to be holding strong. I believe the stuff is called alumaweld or somthing simular. Kentetsu discovered this stuff to work well with are cars suffering the same issue you have. Its worth a try at 4 bucks.

But thinking about this some more. I think you might just have to find a new engine. the internals are probley junk. You said it has an overheating problem, and has the seal issues most likely from overheating. Plus its been sitting who knows how long. Rust works fast.

I'd replace the all cooling system parts.

The black fluid may be coolant mixing with old carbon in the exhaust system. What color was the smoke? White would be coolant.

since it was also smoking in the engine bay, it might just be the o rings under the intake manifold. Otherwise, internal coolant seals (if the smoke was white).
